Here we are, gearing up for holiday gift giving. If you’re finding yourself scrambling to have something for everyone, this Drop to It Beanie may be just the ticket! This free crochet pattern uses scrap yarn – and not much of it at that! Whip one up in an afternoon. 🙂

Drop to It Beanie

This pattern was written specifically for partial skeins of yarn. In other words, scraps. At just 160 yards – about half of a skein of acrylic yarn – its the perfect amount to use up your stash while making quick gifts for the family.

For this beanie we are using chain stitches and double crochet stitches. We will work three double crochets into the row two below, so that it gives a textured look, yet is easy-to-crochet. Cute and easy… my favorite!

Materials:

Worsted weight (size 4, or Aran) yarn
-approx. 160 yards

Crochet hook in size I/5.5mm

Gauge: 14 dc sts x 9 rows = 4″ square

Finished Size: adult, approx. 21″ head circumference

Pattern Notes:

Pattern written using US terms.

The Ch-2 at the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch.

The stitch multiple for this pattern is 8. To size it down, simply remove stitches from row 1 in multiples of eight.

On rounds 7 & 9, when working the 3dc into the row 2 rows below, crochet around the chain space.

We use Front Post and Back Post Double Crochet stitches to create the brim. See a tutorial for post stitches here.

To start we use Foundation Double Crochet. See the video tutorial here, or use the alternate chain method as outlined in round 1.

The Drop To It Beanie is a bit on the slouchy side. If you’d like a more fitted beanie stop at row 17 instead of 21.

  1. In rows 22-24 do you slip stitch to the first stitch of the previous row? I tried doing that but then I had trouble cinching it together and thought that might be why. Help, what am I missing? I can't get it to pull together.
    1. Hi Christine! Yes, you will join at the end of each of those rounds. And at the end, you will use that long tail to weave in and out around the top of the beanie, then pull to cinch it up.
  2. Great pattern! Quick to work up, subtle design but just enough to be seen, and looks just lovely. I used a brownish yarn and it turned out wonderfully....thank you so much!!
  3. I'm confused about the start of each round, "ch 2, turn". is this worked by going back and forth, so like left to right one row, then right to left the next row? or is it worked in the same direction each round?
    1. Since you turn each row, you are working in the opposite direction of the previous row...so every other row you are looking at the outside of the hat, and at the inside on the other rows. I hope this helps!
    1. Hi! You will place that final sc in the top of the same stitch that you just did the last bpdc around.
  4. Thank you so much for this cute pattern. Is there any way to add it to my Ravelry library so I can access it when I have time to work on it? The holiday season is just crazy busy. Thanks so much.
    1. Hi Clista! Yes, the ravelry link can be found here: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/drop-to-it-beanie
  5. What a great idea! Looks very You amaze me how many wonderful things you come up with in your already busy life! Thanks!
  6. I'm lost and it seemed so simple. I can't find what I did wrong but 7 to 8 is not making sense. Should I have 5 DC at each end of round 6? Because the instructions are ending with skip 3 and that made no sense. What am I missing?
  7. Round 1: Fdc-71. Join to first stitch. (Alternately you could ch-73, dc in 3rd ch from hook and in each to end. Join) (71) How do you JOIN?
