Do you have a secret savings account? Do you wish you had a secret savings account? We have multiple accounts here. We have our “emergency” account which we have for in case one of the vehicles needs a major repair or if the fridge goes out. Then we have our “real savings” that we are saving for vacations and fun. We deposit into that as much as possible after the bills are paid every. single. month.
Some months that number is nothing, some months that is $500 or more. It all just depends on what we’ve had going on that month, if we took the dogs to the vet, if we drove to Kansas City for a doctor’s appointment and spent more on gas, or if we stocked up on meat etc.
The point is that we throw as much money at it as we can, as often as we can.
Then we have a secret savings account, that we contribute a set amount to automatically every single month. We are talking small amounts that we don’t notice. Set an agreed-upon amount to contribute from each paycheck. Would you really miss $25? If you’re paid 26 times per year (bi-weekly) that would be $650 at the end of the year.
What could you do with $650?
*Use it to pay for Christmas
*Use it to surprise your spouse for your anniversary – staycation?
*Use it to take a mini-vacation
*Use it to SPLURGE on yourself
*Use it to buy plane tickets to see friends/family
This secret savings account is my personal slush fund. I very rarely buy new clothes for myself, even more seldom do I get a pedicure, or color my hair – but when I DO and I use my secret savings – there is no guilt involved.
Deciding to start that savings account can be difficult – especially when there’s not much to put IN that account. Let me tell you this: It costs nothing to open, and you are only holding yourself back if you do not contribute.
If you create an automatic and recurring transfer from your checking to secret savings, you’ll never know you had it, and you’ll never miss it. Promise!
