Let’s face it: Bisquick is ridiculously expensive.  Instead of dropping all that dough (see what I did there?) why not try making your own homemade Bisquick?  This recipe is fool-proof and will keep for months in an air-tight container. You diggin’ it? Let’s do it.

This recipe uses just four simple ingredients and takes less than 6 mins to make! Yes, I’ve timed myself!  😉 I actually use this mix so frequently that I make a triple batch of the recipe posted below. So make a little or make a lot!  It keeps well in an airtight container for at least 3 months.  At least that’s about how long mine lasts before I have to make more.

Recipe yields approx 7 C. of baking mix.

6 C flour
3 TBS baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 C vegetable shortening (Crisco)

Sift the dry ingredients.  Sifting helps the next step go more smoothly but isn’t entirely necessary. Cut in the shortening (I use a pastry blender to speed this process).  You’ll continue to cut in the shortening until you have tiny balls of shortening in with the flour.

That is it, folks! Store in an airtight container and use as needed. So easy and homemade Bisquick is so much more cost effective than store-bought Bisquick!  Stay tuned because we’ll be posting a biscuit recipe that is only THREE ingredients; one of which is this homemade Bisquick! Woot!

  1. Hi Ashlea, Is there any chance that you could add to your recipes Pounds and Ounces or Grams. Trying to work out what cups are is really difficult. Or is there a chart somewhere that I could print off, that explains the measurements/weights. Thankyou in advance. Janice.
  2. This is great! One question though. Do you store it in the fridge or just in the pantry? I keep my Bisquick in the fridge for freshness. I did not realize that Bisquick has shortening in it. I guess I will have to read the labe.
    1. If Baking Powder is being added it is generally Plain Flour or All Purpose Flour (both the aformentioned are the same thing). Hope this helps.
