One of the very first crochet patterns I ever designed was the Hair Towel with a Twist. How on earth has it taken me this long to publish a child size version?! Without further ado, I present to you the Hair Towel with a Twist for children!

This child size hair towel will fit children as young as 5 all the way until they are teenagers. My lovely model falls right in the middle of the age range at age nine. Whip one up for your own child, and make sure you make one for yourself as well! These are great for gifts!

Hair towel for children

Sc through both sides of the fabric for 12 sts. Place an elastic hair tie in between the pieces and crochet around/in between it for 6 sts. Sc in remaining sts to end. Fasten off, weave in ends.

Hair towel with a twist for children

Flip to other end (still with the right sides together) and attach yarn where the fold is as shown and sc in both sides of each st to end. Open hair towel and flip to where you’re looking at the “right side” and sc in each row end around entire piece. Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Crocheting the end of Hair towel

That’s it! To wear the towel after a shower, bend over and comb your hair smooth. Place the widest part around your head and tuck the ends of your hair in the skinnier end. Twist the towel and insert the end into the elastic at the back of the head.

  1. Hello. I don’t understand what “sides” are stitched together. Is this supposed to look like an elf type hat? I would like to see a picture of it lengthwise please. I’m done and lost.
    1. Hi Joy! You fold it in half lengthwise and sew at the top end and the bottom end. The photos in the adult size post may show this better for you. https://hearthookhome.com/hair-towel-with-a-twist/
    1. Try checking your gauge. I made the adult size first, which calls for 275 yards and used about 300, because my stitches were loose causing my gauge to be off. Hope that helps!
  2. I am just learning to crochet so only attempt beginner or easy patterns. I was wondering why you don't have a skill level on any of yours. It would be very helpful.
