Garage sale season is in full swing and while we are out hunting for deals, it is important to be on the lookout for some items while steering clear of others. Everyone loves a bargain, but there are just some things that you should not buy {or sell} at a garage sale.

Small plastic toys

11 Things You Should NOT Buy {or sell} at a Garage Sale

1. Bicycle Helmets

Helmets are intended for one-accident only. You never know if that helmet you’re about to buy has been in an accident or a fall, and they aren’t super expensive to buy new. Older styles don’t offer the protection that newer models do.

2. Car Seats

Just like bicycle helmets, car seats are intended for one accident only. Also, car seats do have expiration dates, the plastic can turn brittle which we definitely wouldn’t want if we were to get in an accident ourselves. It is best to buy car seats new.

3. Swimsuits

Aside from the ewwww factor, yeah… just eww.

4. Mattresses

One thing you do not want to bring home from a garage sale is bed bugs, other people’s bodily fluids and odors and/or stains. Unless you absolutely can not afford new, a used mattress could carry a whole lot of nasty.

5. Laptops or e-Readers (electronics in general)

Technology is constantly changing. What may seem like a great deal at first glance, often can be found online or elsewhere at a great bargain – without having someone else’s information or having to clean out or do the factory reset.

Battery operated? Check to see that the batteries inside aren’t corroded. That would make your purchase a big ol waste of money.

6. Baby Bottles and Pacifiers

Aside from the ick factor, older bottles and/or pacifiers may contain BPA, a potentially harmful chemical found in plastics. You can find some great deals online for baby bottles and pacifiers alike.

Wanna save this for later?

We'll email this post to you, so you can come back to it when you're ready.

7. Makeup

You’re not supposed to share makeup with your family members, let alone complete strangers. Bacteria and foreign matter that you would then be smearing all over your face. No thanks.

8. Running Shoes

Shoes in general, actually. Shoes mold to one person’s feet with repeated wear. Not only may the shoes be uncomfortable, but the cushion and the support may be shot. Not to mention you never know if the previous owner had athletes foot or any other foot funk.

9. Hats/Headwear

While you may be able to remove any head lice or dandruff, hats are cheap to buy new.

10. Non-stick Cookware

Cookware breaks down over time. The average life-span should be between 3 – 5 years, and any chipping or flaking is a big no-no.

11. Toy Box without Spring Supports

Be careful on any baby gear, but toy boxes especially. While it may look like a great deal, make sure that a toy box has the spring supports on the hinges before buying. You’d hate to have Jr’s neck or head smashed when reaching for a toy.

These items extend to thrift stores as well. Just be careful with what you purchase, and be smart with your bargain buys.
