Cocoon crochet pattern in three sizes

Cocoon Sweater Crochet Pattern

This cocoon pattern is available in three sizes: petite, one-size, and plus size. Since this is not a fitted garment, the sizing is very forgiving and the one-size will work for most body types.

Petite would be nice for folks that are on the shorter side, the One-Size would be best for anyone of “average” height and between the US dress sizes approximately size 6 to size 20 or so, and the Plus Size is best suited for larger sizes.

Line up the first row to the last row. This will be the body opening. Sew horizontally for the width of ~10” to create armholes. The inside opening should be all single crochets.

Edging (all sizes):

Attach anywhere along inner edging with sl st.

Row 1: Ch-8, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to end. Sl st to corresponding open stitch on body. (7)

Row 2: Sl st to next open st on body, turn. Sc in BLO of next 6 sts, sc in both loops of last st. (7)

Row 3: Ch-1, turn, sc in BLO of each st to end. Sl st to corresponding open st on body. (7)

Alternate rows 2 & 3 all the way around the entire opening of the cardigan.

When you reach the beginning, sew the first row of the edging to the last row of edging and weave in all ends. You’re finished!

  1. Made the petite size with Caron simply soft. The 119 rows ended up being 25 in instead of 36. So I just rolled with it and thought okay it will be child size... however while doing the edging it just doesn't lay right and is floppy. I have read and reread the pattern and I am so very frustrated. I think it is the BLO on both the 2nd and 3rd row repeat just makes it too wide so it won't lay flat. I'm going to try it without one of the BLO and see if that helps
  2. Hello! I love this pattern and I just finished the body this morning. When I laid it out to do the seams, it is so uneven even though I used markers, counted stitches like my life depended on it, and kept the tension as perfect as I could. How were you able to get the edges so straight before construction? Thank you!!
  3. Ashley, thanks so much for sharing this pattern. Can you possibly advise about the number of foundation stitches or chains for a cocoon made with sport weight yarn. Love your patterns and that you share them for free! Thanks in advance Chris
  4. Hi Ashlea. For row 101 on petite size is sc done in both loops or blo? Also on the ribbing row are the stitches on both ends done in both loops. Thank you for this pattern.
  5. I'm working on the edging on cocoon shawl pattern-confused as per instructions Edging continues to widen rather than lengthen, Do you have video showing techenic
  6. I'm working on my cocoon and was wondering how wide it is supposed to be. it looks like 36 inches tall, but not sure on width! Thank you!
    1. Hi Madeline! It should be just about square...so the one-size would be approximately 36"x36". Hope this helps!
  7. Hi Ashlea, I started the Cocoon using LB Vannas's choice which is a worsted but it feels really stiff and heavy and doesn't act like it will have the drape yours appears to have. Will it loosen up after washing or is better to start w something else? Thanks for your help! Pam
  8. Ashley, wanting to make for my daughter, ( recently diagnosed with breast cancer ) to wear during her treatments. Not sure on size to make? She is a size 4 to 6 but average in height
    1. Hi Nanny! I think I would go with the Petite size...and I wish you and your daughter well during her treatments and through this difficult time.
