Do you wish you had a lightweight, over-sized cardigan to wear during the cooler months? Perfect for fall and spring – and any time in between? This Grid Cardi crochet pattern is exactly that.

The Grid Cardi

I love the Grid Cardi because it is extremely lightweight, yet just warm enough to wear when there’s a slight chill in the air, and it sure feels fancy on.

There are three sizes included in this pattern; a petite size (up to about size 8 US), one-size (from about size 8 US to 2XL), and a plus size (up to about 5XL).

I love the delicacy of the Grid Stitch when paired with this thin yarn and the edging gives it a truly high-end boutique vibe.

Because of the thinness of the yarn, this pattern does take a bit longer to work up than my other patterns. It is not difficult to crochet! In fact this is a mindless crochet pattern with very little counting required. It would be an excellent project to pick up and put down, say when you’re waiting at the kids’ school for pick up time, or when you’re “watching” Netflix. 😉

We'll email this post to you, so you can come back to it when you're ready.

Find the VIDEO tutorial for adding the sleeves and the edging below.

Note that if you would like it more of a vest pattern (or you don’t have enough yarn on hand), you could omit the sleeves and edging entirely. The way the body works up it appears to have small cap sleeves already. On this version below I omitted both the sleeves and the edging, opting instead for a fringed vest.

I will be crocheting up a small piece of the Grid Stitch pattern so that I can record a video on how to start the edging and where to attach to the body each row. The video will also show how to start and complete the sleeves. Go ahead and subscribe to my YouTube channel so that you’re alerted when that video is ready.

  1. Hi Ashley, What yarn did you use for the vest? It looks like a one that fades into each color. Thank you for your help@
  2. I saw in the earlier comment, you did 18 rows per color for a one size. How many rows per color for the plus? I’m using the exact same yarn. Thank you for your time, I love your patterns!
    1. Hi Shannon! You will want to start by taking the total number of rows divided by how many colors you are using...if you are doing the same as mine then you would do 19 rows of 5 colors and 18 rows with 1 color.
  3. I love the idea of a mesh cardigan and how lightweight it must be. Will make mine about one color band shorter, though -- long enough to be stylish but short enough for me. One hopefully easy request -- Is there any way you can add a few photos of your fringed vest version to the Ravelry pattern page -- or add a project entry featuring the fringed vest version? I think I love it even more than the cardigan, but had no idea you did that until I came here to your website. I also love the softer tone-on-tone colors of the vest version! So pretty. You are so creative and kind. Thanks for all you do, including your tutorials and crochet articles with tips and storage ideas, etc. P.S. We have a daughter (now grown with children of her own) who is a CHD survivor! I know some of what you, your son, and your whole family went through!
    1. I have a video for adding the sleeves and edging, but not for the making of the body of this cardigan
      1. Hi, I'm new at following crochet clothes patterns. I bought this lovely pattern and the proper yarn arrived a few days ago. I'm ready to start, but not sure where on the cardigan does the pattern start at? Upper front, lower back??? Do you have a photo or a sketch of each piece laid out similar to a sewing pattern that lays out the pieces and shows how the connect together?
        1. Hi Audrey! This pattern is worked all in one piece. It is worked from the bottom up. You start with the bottom which is the "body" of the pattern...it will be the total width/circumference of the cardi. Then you split off into the left panel, center/back panel, and right panel...all worked onto the body previously made.
          1. Hi Ashley, Ok, thanks. I'll follow the pattern and give it a try. I'm watching your video tutorials now before I begin. Thanks again! :o)
  4. Hi Ashley, I bought this pattern a while ago but am a very visual learner so am struggling just getting my head around the written instructions. I've seen mentioned a video for this one but can't find it anywhere. Do you have a link please? Thanks
  5. So looking forward to making this, but everywhere around me is sold of of superfine yarn! I'll keep trying.
  6. Love how easy this pattern is but it looks so much more complicated. I’m making mine longer by adding more rows. I’m doing 20 rows of each color until I get to the last color. It will probably be longer because my arms are large. I made the plus size but I had 95 stitch instead of 90. So I divided the left and right into 20 each and the center/back at 55. I would love to block my cardi first as you recommend before sewing the seams. Can you please share how to do this so the blocks are open and defined? You have some great patterns. I’ve already been asked to make more grid cardi’s by family.
  7. I’m making the grid cardi. The yarn says 3 but feels thinner. I m normally one size. Should I make plus size?
    1. The yarn bee yarn suggested is a # 1 super fine weight yarn. It’s lovely and definitely the perfect yarn for this design. I loved working with it.
  8. LOVE this Cardi ! Made a Tunic with the same stitch pattern before - with varigated yarn. Now it's time to make a cardi. Greetings from Germany and thank you for your great patterns. Signed up to your mail list.
  9. Hi! I am hearing impaired and bought your Grid Cardi pattern and print out. How many each rows for color changing? I am One Size.
  10. Thank you Ashley.this is on my to do list, but I am going to end after the dark orange color to make it shorter. You are so talented!
