The weather has turned which, for me, means that my ankles are always cold. I do like to wear flats year-round, so leg warmers are a must! Whip up these adorable, super quick leg warmers with this free crochet pattern to keep those ankles warm – and to extend the wear-time of your flats this fall.

When asked if I would design a crochet pattern for The Knitting Cup during this year’s The Best Little Yarn Crawl in Texas, of course I agreed. I mean, how cute is that name?! These leg warmers are comfortable, they don’t slip off the back of the feet, and they are stylish, too! The Berroco Sesame yarn she chose for her stop of the yarn crawl (The Knitting Cup) was an excellent choice! I love working with the little pops of color and speckles of what I call the “sesame seeds”.

This pattern also doubles as a wristlet pattern! Make just the leg warmers, just the wristlets, or both if you have enough yarn. I designed this pattern so that if you make both the leg warmers and the wristlets, you will need just two balls of the Berroco Sesame, or about 450 yards total.

Because of the crazy awesome color and texture changes of this yarn, I decided to use a super simple stitch, the Half Double Crochet. I didn’t want the stitch set to detract from the yarn itself, rather let the yarn tell the story.

Materials:

Berroco Sesame Yarn
(size 4-wool/acrylic/cotton/nylon blend)
-approx. 118 yards for wristlets
-approx. 332 yards for leg warmers

Crochet hook in size H/5mm

Gauge: 12 hdc sts x 13 rows = 4”

Finished Wristlet Dimensions: approx. 4” wide and 7.5” tall

Finished Leg Warmer Dimensions: approx. 5.5” wide and 15” tall

Pattern Notes:

The ch-1 at the beginning of the row does not count as a stitch.

Always work sts in between the sts from the previous row, with exception of the last (picot) row.

Picot = ch-3, sl st to first ch made.

Hdc = Half Double Crochet

Wristlet Pattern:

Row 1: Fhdc-26 (or ch-27, hdc in 2nd ch from hook and each to end) Join to top of first hdc with sl st. (26)

Rows 2 – 13: Ch-1, turn, hdc in between each of the sts from the previous row. Join to top of first hdc with sl st. (26)

Row 14: Ch-1, turn, hdc2tog, hdc in between remaining sts around. Join to top of first hdc with sl st. (25)

Rows 15 – 17: repeat row 2 (25)

Row 18: Ch-1, turn, hdc in between each of the sts from the previous row, except last 2 sts, hdc2tog in those last 2. (24)

Rows 19 – 23: repeat row 2 (24)

Row 24: Ch-1, turn, * sc in 3 sts, picot * repeat between * * around. Join to top of first st with sl st. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Leg Warmer pattern:

Row 1: Fhdc-36 (or ch-37, hdc in 2nd ch from hook and each to end) Join to top of first hdc with sl st. (36)

Rows 2 – 47: Ch-1, turn, hdc in between the sts from the previous row. Join to top of first hdc with sl st. (36)

Row 48: Ch-1, turn, * sc in 3 sts, picot * repeat between * * around. Join to top of first st with sl st. Fasten off and weave in ends.

That. Is. It. And how easy was that?!

  1. So glad I came across this pattern for leg warmers and wristlets. I never heard of wristlets until now but with crochet, anything is possible! My step granddaughter would love these for her upcoming birthday along with the bucket hat in Lion Brand Wool-ease!
  2. ...actually, I just looked it up, and the yarn is still available. Yay!! Do you by chance remember the colourway you used for your set? It’s absolutely perfect!
  3. These are gorgeous! I hope I can find the exact yarn... I’m wondering, since you work between the stitches, do you think this could be worked up in a spiral (instead of the chain 1 at the start of each row)? I always have a hard time with joined rows. Thanks for the great pattern :)
  4. Actually I think the wristlet pattern will work as leg warmers for the 2 year old, so never mind my original question. I'll let you know how they turn out! Thank you!
  5. My 2-year-old granddaughter would love these. Could you help me figure out size adjustment to the pattern, please? Thank you!
    1. I'm working mine up in Wool and the Gang Tina Tape Yarn (100% Tencel) because my sister in law can't wear wool. The downside is that the tape yarn is monochromatic, but the texture on these wristlets is very pretty, even without the variegation.
  6. They look elegant with this yarn. Thanks so much for this pattern, so glad it's easy, my granddaughters will be able to make these for Christmas presents for their friends.
