After several years of loving the Cold Shoulder Coverup pattern for adults, I have decided to expand those sizes to include the littles! Grab your hook and let’s make a child size of the Cold Shoulder Coverup. ♥

Child Cold Shoulder Coverup Pattern

Child Size Coverup

This Cold Shoulder design is super cute on the little ones. Whether they’re wearing it as a shirt over a tank top or over an actual swimsuit, they are sure to be the most adorable kid on the block or beach! If you intend to wear this pattern as a swimsuit coverup, I recommend using 100% cotton yarn or a cotton blend. If you plan to wear this as a top with jeans, practically any lightweight/DK/Size 3 yarn would work great!

Materials:

Cotton yarn (Lion Brand Comfy Cotton pictured)
-approx. 215 yards for 12/18M
-approx. 225 yards for 2/3T
-approx. 250 yards for 3/4T
-approx. 340 yards for 4/6
-approx. 425 yards for 6/8
-approx. 550 yards for 10/12

Crochet hook in size J/6mm

(8)x Stitch markers

Gauge: 11 hdc sts x 10 hdc rows = 4” square

Pattern Notes:

Pattern written using US terms.

Do not turn throughout the pattern.

We use Foundation Half Double Crochet to start. You could alternately make a chain and hdc back through.

The Ch-4 at the beginning of the treble/triple crochet rows DOES count as a stitch.

The Ch-1 at the beginning of the hdc rows does NOT count as a stitch.

Pattern:

Sizes: (12/18M, 2/3T, 3/4T, 4/6, 6/8, 10/12)

Body:

Row 1: Fhdc – (64, 66, 72, 78, 86, 94) Join to first stitch without twisting.

Rows 2 – 4: Ch-1 (does not count as a st), do not turn, hdc in same st as join and in each st around. Join to top of first hdc with sl st. (64, 66, 72, 78, 86, 94)

Row 5: Ch-4 (counts as tc + chain-1 here and throughout), do not turn, sk next st, tc in next. * ch-1, sk next st, tc in next * repeat between * * around. Ch-1, join to third ch from beg ch with sl st. (64, 66, 72, 78, 86, 94)

Row 6: Ch-1 (does not count as a st here and throughout), do not turn, hdc around the very first ch-sp, hdc in top of next tc. * hdc around next ch-sp, hdc in top of next tc * repeat between * * around. 2hdc around last ch-sp. Join to top of first hdc with sl st. (64, 66, 72, 78, 86, 94)

Rows 7 through (18, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26): Repeat rows 5 & 6 (64, 66, 72, 78, 86, 94)

Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Sleeves:

Row 1: Fhdc – (22, 24, 24, 26, 28, 30) Join to first stitch without twisting.

Rows 2 – 4: Ch-1, do not turn, hdc in same st as join and in each st around. Join to top of first hdc with sl st. (22, 24, 24, 26, 28, 30)

Row 5: Ch-4 (counts as tc + chain-1 here and throughout), do not turn, sk next st, tc in next. * ch-1, sk next st, tc in next * repeat between * * around. Ch-1, join to third ch from beg ch with sl st. (22, 24, 24, 26, 28, 30)

Row 6: Ch-1 (does not count as a st, here and throughout), do not turn, hdc around the very first ch-sp, hdc in top of next tc. * hdc around next ch-sp, hdc in top of next tc * repeat between * * around. 2hdc around last ch-sp. Join to top of first hdc with sl st. (22, 24, 24, 26, 28, 30)

Rows 7 through (10, 10, 10, 12, 12, 16): Repeat rows 5 & 6 (22, 24, 24, 26, 28, 30)

Fasten off leaving ~10” tail for sewing.

Construction:

From where you ended on the body, count (5, 6, 6, 7, 7, 8) sts to the right. Line up the tail from the sleeve with this stitch, and whip stitch together, stitch for stitch, for a total of (11, 12, 12, 13, 14, 15) sts.

*Be sure not to count the join on the body as a stitch.

From where the first sleeve ended, count (22, 22, 25, 27, 30, 33) sts over and, starting in that stitch, sew the second sleeve on in the same manner as the first, for (11, 12, 12, 13, 14, 15) sts.

This should leave (21, 21, 24, 26, 29, 32) sts unworked on both the front and the back of the coverup. Weave in all ends.

Top:

Attach yarn at any corner where the sleeve meets the body.

Rows 1 – 4: Ch-1, hdc in each st around. Do not join, work in a spiral, noting the first st of each row with a stitch marker. (64, 66, 72, 78, 86, 94)

Straps:

Plot out your strap placement using the chart below and the eight stitch markers. Check that the straps will be centered.

Looking at the “front”, attach yarn in far right stitch marker. (or far left if you’re left handed)

Straps for Sizes 12/18M, 2/3T, 3/4T, 4/6:

Row 1: Ch-1, hdc in same st and in next 3 sts. (4)

Rows 2 through (6, 8, 12, 12): Ch-1, turn, hdc in each st to end. (4)

Straps for Sizes 6/8, 10/12:

Row 1: Ch-1, hdc in same st and in next 5 sts. (6)

Row 2: Ch-1, turn, hdc2tog, hdc in next 2 sts, hdc2tog. (4)

Rows 3 – 13: Ch-1, turn, hdc in each st to end. (4)

Row 14: Ch-1, 2hdc in first st, hdc in next 2 sts, 2hdc in last. (6)

Repeat for the second strap, starting at the “front” both times. Position straps on back, lining up with the stitch markers. Sew the straps stitch for stitch to the back using a yarn needle. Weave in all ends.

Finishing:

Attach yarn at arm opening (see photo).

Final Row: Ch-1. Hdc in same st and each around (up the side of the strap and back to beginning). Join using Invisible Join. Do the same for the neck hole and other arm opening. Weave in all ends. You are done!

I hope you enjoy this adorable little Cold Shoulder Coverup! When you’re done with this one, please share a photo with us in the Heart Hook Home Crochet Community on Facebook.

(A). Your toddler model is adorable!!! And (B). Will be starting the “Cold Shoulder” top as soon as I can get some appropriate yarn for it!! If she’ll cooperate and stand still for a picture, I’ll even send you a photo. Thanks- I really enjoy this blog and have flagged many of your emails for “future patterns”.
