Do you have a new puppy? Or perhaps an old puppy that now needs to use the restroom more frequently than they used to? Grab your crochet hook, yarn, and some bells, because we’re whipping up a set of potty training dog bells to hang from the door knob so the dogs can let us know when they need to go outside.

Dog Potty Bell Door Knob Hanger Pattern

We have a new puppy in the house, 3-month old Sophie. She is a yellow Labrador Retriever and she is simply the most adorable girl. She’s got her playful side, but she’s also got a remarkably mellow side for a puppy of only three months! She likes to sprawl out when she sleeps and she runs off with my yarn at every opportunity.

Sophie is getting along great with her new sisters, Maisey and Cher. She’s sleeping great (I was thrown back to life with a newborn there for a minute!) and she’s eating great and gaining weight and learning how to sit and catch treats and all that good stuff. All that to say… the potty training is still a work in progress.

Of course we keep as close an eye on her as we can, but there are inevitably times that she’ll disappear and in the blink of an eye, there’s a new puddle on the kitchen floor near the backdoor. She’s trying to go to the right place (literally haha!), and having a set of bells hanging from the door knob there that we can train her to ring at the right time… priceless!

Just think of all the paper towels and floor cleaner we’ll save too!

For this pattern I am using Craft Cotton in the “Cream” colorway. You could use any other worsted weight cotton, or even acrylic, or just some stash yarn since it doesn’t take much! I am also using one pack of 1″ bells, and you should need 6-8 of them depending on how long you make yours. What’s great about the multi-pack of bells is that this pattern works up SO QUICKLY, you can make a set for every single outside door in the house!

Row 51: repeat row 27 (5)

Row 52: repeat row 6

Row 53: repeat row 6

Rotate to crochet down the length, placing 3 scs along each Ltr row end. 3sc in corner st, sc across bottom, 3sc in corner st. Work up the length placing 3 scs along each Ltr row end, 3sc in corner st, sc across top. Sl st to first border st made. Do not fasten off.

Hanger:

Where still attached, ch-30, sl st to opposite corner and fasten off. Weave in ends a bit and clip tails. You’re finished! The hanger should be long enough that you can feed the length of it back through to secure around a door handle instead of a knob.

How easy was that?! You can make oodles of them to hang around your home, for a friend of family member with a new puppy in the house, or to sell at craft fairs. The profit margin would be amazing!!

How many will you make, and what color will you use?

  1. I'm almost 80 and for years had a kennel and training school. Much to my chagrin I no longer have the kennel. When I saw this pattern -- what a great idea that I think will really work for any age dog. I would equate using this to whistle training. I still crochet small projects. I will be using this pattern to give to friends and family who are potty training a pet. Thanks so much for this pattern, Jane Brown.
