This crocheted snood – or hair net – pattern is perfect for keeping your hair out of the way while hanging around the house, or letting your curly hair dry undisturbed. Whip one up with this super quick, free crochet pattern!

Crochet Snood pattern

Crochet Snood (Hair Net)

Since I rarely leave the house nowadays I’m letting my naturally wavy hair air-dry. It’s almost to the middle of my back which means that it takes a while to dry. While this isn’t a huge deal, I’d like for it to be up and off of my neck while it does so, and this snood is the perfect solution!

how to crochet a hair net

For this crocheted hair net we are using Curio #3 crochet thread. I had originally wanted to use a cotton yarn – like my favorite cotton, Dishie – but I worried that the 100% cotton would suck too much moisture out of the hair. Keep this in mind if you are worried about your own hair’s moisture as well. Of course, if you’re not using this while your hair is drying, but rather to keep your already dry hair off of your neck/back, then it won’t really matter which you use.

-approx. 87 yards

Crochet hook in size H/5mm

Pattern Notes:

The chain at the beginning of the round does count as a stitch.

Before you start, go ahead and prepare your elastic. Cut to 17″ in length for “adult” size. Overlap the ends slightly and sew to form a circle using the needle and thread.

Pattern:

With H/5mm hook…

Round 1: Magic Circle. Ch-4 (counts as Tr), Tr 11x in circle. Join to top of beg ch. Pull circle closed. (12)

Round 2: Ch-5 (counts as Tr + ch-1), turn, * Tr in next st, ch-1 * repeat between * * around. Join to 4th ch from beg ch. (24)

Round 3: Ch-6 (counts as Tr + ch-2 here and throughout), turn, Tr in same as turning. * Ch-2, sk-next ch-sp, (Tr, ch-2, Tr) in next Tr * repeat between * * around. Ch-2, Join to 4th ch from beg ch. (72)

Rounds 4 – 13: Ch-6, turn, sk-first 2 chs, * Tr in next Tr, ch-2, sk-2 chs * repeat between * * around. Join to 4th chain from beg chain. (72)

Switch to G/4mm hook…

Round 14: Ch-1, do not turn, hdc in first st (same as join), 2hdc around next ch-sp. * hdc in next st, 2hdc around next ch-sp * repeat between * * around. Join to top of first hdc. (72)

Round 15: Ch-1, do not turn. Working around the elastic, hdc in each st around. Join. (72)

Round 16: Ch-1, do not turn, hdc in each st around. (72) Fasten off using Invisible Join.

That’s it! I love how quickly these work up, and how useful they are! When you make one, please share a photo with us in the Heart Hook Home Crochet Community on Facebook, or tag @HeartHookHome across all social media.

Would it work out okay to use acrylic yarn and only use the suggested or 100% cotton? I’m trying to refrain from purchasing ore yarn. Lol

Ashley, If you were to make for shorter hair ( shoulder length and above) would you still crochet as many rows or would you make it shorter. Could you also use a hair band for the elastic? Thanks

Hi Theresa! Yes, you could do less rows for shorter hair...maybe do 10 rows instead of 13 before doing the band. And yes, you can use a hair band as long as it can fit easily and snugly around the head. Hope this helps!
