Crochet Snood (Hair Net)

Since I rarely leave the house nowadays I’m letting my naturally wavy hair air-dry. It’s almost to the middle of my back which means that it takes a while to dry. While this isn’t a huge deal, I’d like for it to be up and off of my neck while it does so, and this snood is the perfect solution!

how to crochet a hair net

For this crocheted hair net we are using Curio #3 crochet thread. I had originally wanted to use a cotton yarn – like my favorite cotton, Dishie – but I worried that the 100% cotton would suck too much moisture out of the hair. Keep this in mind if you are worried about your own hair’s moisture as well. Of course, if you’re not using this while your hair is drying, but rather to keep your already dry hair off of your neck/back, then it won’t really matter which you use.

Before you start, go ahead and prepare your elastic. Cut to 17″ in length for “adult” size. Overlap the ends slightly and sew to form a circle using the needle and thread.

  1. Hello, I have a question about going from route 2 to 3. It says that you start with 24 trebles and when finished row 3 you should have 72 trebles. You can't get 72 with only putting 2 in every treble(as i read it), it should be 48, right, or am i missing something. HELP!!!
    1. Hi Linda! The stitch count includes the chain stitches. So, Round 2 will have 12 Trebles and 12 chains for a total of 24 sts, and Round 3 will have 24 Trebles and 48 chains (24 ch-2 sets) for a total of 72 sts. I hope this helps!
  2. Hi I love the way this looks and am trying your pattern out but right at the beginning I'm having an issue the 2nd row is that meant to be 2 in each st? I'm not the best at reading patterns but I muddle my way through. Thank you for this by the way.
  3. In the materials needed list you list elastic cording like this. That link takes me to small round elastic cording but in the pictures it shows flat elastic. Which is it?
  4. What is the diameter of row 4? I have 72 stitches but it doesn’t seem like it will be large enough to fit aodult head.
  5. This is a lovely snood and I really want to make several but there is an issue in row 2. Cannot figure out where you get 24 as it does not state to crochet 2 stitches in each in each stitch of first row. Am so sad that I can't continue. I have been crocheting for 55 years and have slowed down a lot so to find a sweet little pattern like this is such a joy. Please let me know and again, thank you.
    1. Hi Paulette! The chain 1's count as stitches which is how you get 24 total stitches for the round.
  6. I wish there were additional pictures, such as progression pictures and close ups. Though, I had the right count, my beginning is shaped strangely. I am starting over, hopefully to correct a potential mistake.
  7. Have been looking for snood pattern for ages, reading the pattern it looks quite straight forward, the question I have is living in England can you tell me what ply is the material you used. Regards
  8. The pattern would read more clearly if you would put the TOTAL stitch count at the end of each row, viz: Round 1, 12 sts TOTAL; Round 2, 24 sts TOTAL; Round 3, 72 TOTAL, etc. I hadn't realized that, and you should see the huge, ruffly thing I ended up with! (I made it to row 4 and decided I MUST be doing something wrong!) Your reply to T J Collis February 23, 2021 at 9:19 pm, solved my problem. Thank you for the darling pattern! I have been looking for a snood pattern for quite some time, and yours is the best one I have ever come across! How kind of you it is to post it for crochetters.
  9. Wish there was a video! I do soo much better that way. Turned out better then other pattern but still not fitting right
  10. This is such a beautiful pattern...try as I may, I cannot get 72 at round 3. What can I be doing wrong...please help if you can.
  11. Would it work out okay to use acrylic yarn and only use the suggested or 100% cotton? I’m trying to refrain from purchasing ore yarn. Lol
  12. Thank you for the pattern. It is on my list of so many things I want to make. I will send you a picture after I make it.
  13. Ashley, If you were to make for shorter hair ( shoulder length and above) would you still crochet as many rows or would you make it shorter. Could you also use a hair band for the elastic? Thanks
    1. Hi Theresa! Yes, you could do less rows for shorter hair...maybe do 10 rows instead of 13 before doing the band. And yes, you can use a hair band as long as it can fit easily and snugly around the head. Hope this helps!
