Car Seat Cushion Free Crochet Pattern

Here we are coming to the tail end of the 2022 Car Series and I can’t believe it. This year we’ve made so many fun and functional crochet patterns for the car, and this month is no different.

So far we’ve had a seatbelt cover, a waste basket, a trunk cargo net, sunglasses holder for the visor, collapsible sun shades, and more.

For this month’s installment of the car series we are making a padded seat cushion. I’ll be honest, when I originally made this I did not think I would like it as much as I do. Now I can’t imagine NOT driving with it!

Car seat cushions are typically used for folks that need a little more comfort. Maybe a bit of sciatica, maybe a hip that gives you trouble, or maybe you have a long daily commute and need all the extra comfort you can get. Maybe you just want one. This car seat cushion pattern is the perfect solution!

Materials:

Dishie, 100% cotton worsted weight yarn
-490 yards total (approx. 245 yards of two colors)

Crochet hook in size G/4mm

16″ Circular foam cushions (I used one of these… the other 3 cushions in the pack will be used hopefully for a dog bed pattern soon!)

If you use a different sized foam circular cushion than I have, make sure to lay them out on the crochet as you’re going. You may have to stop earlier than the pattern states or you may need to add an extra row based on your tension.

If you are using square foam you’ll want to make a classic Granny Square using this VIDEO pattern/tutorial and continue until size is reached. Ready? Let’s crochet!

Pattern Notes:

Pattern written using US terms.

The chain 2 at the beginning of the row does not count as a stitch.

The “sp” or space as written in the pattern is technically the space in between two double crochet clusters.

Find a tutorial for the Magic Circle here. An alternative would be to chain-4, and sl st to first chain.

For this pattern we are crocheting a granny square pattern in the round. I do have a tutorial for how to crochet a flat granny stitch or a classic granny square. This is a very similar concept, just in the round instead of flat or with corners.

Car Seat Cushion Pattern:

Make two…

Round 1: Magic Circle, Ch-2 (does not count) 12dc in circle. Join to first st. (12)

Round 2: Ch-2, turn, 2dc in between each st around. Join to first st. (24)

Round 3: Ch-2, turn, 3dc in each sp around. Join to first st. (36)

Round 4: Ch-2, turn, * 4dc in next sp, 3dc in next * repeat between * * around. Join to first st. (12 clusters total)

Round 5: Ch-2, turn, * 3dc in each of next 2 sps, sk-2 sts, 3dc in between sts * repeat between * * around. Join to first st. (18 clusters)

Round 6: Ch-2, turn, * 4dc in next sp, 3dc in next * repeat between * * around. Join to first st. (18 clusters total)

Round 7: Ch-2, turn, * 3dc in each of next 2 sps, sk-2 sts, 3dc in between sts * repeat between * * around. Join to first st. (27 clusters)

Round 8: Ch-2, turn, * 4dc in next sp, 3dc in each of next two sps * repeat between * * around. Join to first st. (27 clusters total)

Round 9: Ch-2, turn, * 3dc in each of next 3 sps, sk-2 sts, 3dc in between sts * repeat between * * around. Join to first st. (36 clusters)

Round 10: Ch-2, turn, * 4dc in next sp, 3dc in each of next three sps * repeat between * * around. Join to first st. (36 clusters total)

Round 11: Ch-2, turn, * 3dc in each of next 4 sps, sk-2 sts, 3dc in between sts * repeat between * * around. Join to first st. (45 clusters)

Rounds 12 – 19: Ch-2, turn, 3dc in each sp around. Join to first st. (45 clusters)

Line up circles with the “wrong sides” together. Which ever side looks better to you. Single crochet through both fabrics around. When you get a bit over half way, insert the foam cushion and continue single crocheting around. Fasten off and weave in all ends.

I love that this crocheted car seat cushion is reversible, it is not too thick but offers an amazing comfort that I didn’t know I needed. I hope you’ll make one for your own vehicle and I hope you love yours as much as I love mine!
