Anyone’s Granny Shirt – Free Crochet Pattern

If there’s one thing I love to do for my boys, it is to crochet for them. My oldest son, Caden, loves to wear interesting shirts and I jumped at the chance to create him something that makes him feel confident and to help express his unique style. This really is a unisex crochet shirt pattern so I decided to name it the “Anyone’s Granny Shirt”. Let’s make one!

Anyone’s Granny Shirt Pattern

What I love the most about this Flat Granny Crochet Shirt pattern is that it is absolutely versatile. Anyone can wear one, you can make it in a nice, solid color, or change colors each and every row. You can choose to close the front of yours by seaming it shut, or add buttons along the length.

This free crochet shirt pattern comes in a whopping EIGHT sizes – ranging SMALL through 5XL.

For this shirt pattern we are using Farmhouse Cotton yarn. This is the most delicious lightweight cotton yarn that makes for a dreamy fabric. My son Caden is modeling the size large.

I made one for myself that was started years ago (and originally intended for Caden!) using the Rainbow Deluxe yarn from Hobbii in the “Classic Gray”, “Oat”, “Mocha Latte”, and “Spruce” colorways.

Materials:

Fingering/#1 Weight Yarn (“Magnolia” and “Verdigris” pictured)
-approx. (1600, 1775, 1975, 2125, 2425, 2675, 2875, 4000) yards
–Farmhouse Cotton used (technically a DK/#3 but works up as a fingering weight)

Crochet hook in size 2.5mm or size needed to obtain gauge

Yarn Needle

Sizing: (S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL) = (37”, 42”, 45”, 49”, 54”, 57”, 60”, 62”)

Gauge: 6 clusters x 13 rows = 4” square using the Flat Granny stitch

Construction:

There are two options for the second half of the shirt. You can either crochet the two panels independently, then seam the center-back stitch-for-stitch. Or, you can start the second panel working directly into row 1 of the first panel, with the armhole to the left, as I have done in these photos. I find it looks cleaner working directly into the first panel. Either way do NOT fasten off on the second panel. We’ll use it later for edging.

If you choose to make two separate panels and seam them, lay the completed panels out so that the two row 1s are touching and lined up, mirroring one another. Sew or slip stitch the two panels together. When you get to the end leave a long enough tail for cleaning up any holes/joins.

Once both panels are completed and are connected, fold the two “fronts” in and line up the shoulders from the outside in. Seam row end for row end using the Mattress Stitch.

Collar:

Attach at front right lapel (as worn)…

Row 1: Ch-1, sc in each dc st (not the ch-sps) around the entire shirt (including the collar and the bottom hem – when working into row ends 2 sts per end), and placing 3sc in each corner st.

Sleeves:

Attach at bottom center of armhole.
