Dog Collar Flower and Bow Tie Patterns

You’ll turn into the paparazzi for your pups with this new, free pattern. Ha!! These two crochet patterns for dogs are the newest installment of the 2024 Dog Crochet Series, and they are so cute and quick to work up. One is a bow tie that is just a handful of rows and the other is a flower that you can make using just a scrap amount of yarn. Wouldn’t these be great for family photos, or for a wedding? Adorable and so dapper!

If there’s one thing I know about having pets it’s the joy they bring just by being their cute little selves. These flowers or bow ties that slip easily onto their collars take that cuteness up a notch! Some dogs also really love to wear clothing so I’m thinking they’ll feel extra special in their new collar embellishments as well.

The 2024 Dog Crochet Series has been so much fun already. I can’t believe this is the fourth pattern! Here are past months:

For these dog collar embellishments I recommend using a cotton yarn, but any worsted weight scrap yarn will technically suffice. The best part is that you don’t need much! Only about 25 yards of yarn per piece. To size the patterns down, use a thinner weight yarn with a smaller hook. For a larger size, use a larger weight yarn and a larger hook.

These dog collar crochet patterns would be a great way to use Brava Mini skeins.

Cotton yarn (Worsted weight, acrylic, or scrap yarn will suffice)
-approx. 25 yards for flower
-approx. 25 yards for bow tie

Crochet hook in size 4.5mm

Stitch marker (for Bow Tie only)

Yarn needle

Gauge: Unimportant

Pattern Notes:

Pattern written using US terms.

Fsc = Foundation Single Crochet (tutorial here)

Finished Dimensions: As is the flower measures approximately 3.5″ (9 cm) across and the bow tie measures approximately 4″ (10 cm) across.

To make the Bow Tie wider you can add any number of chains, 40 or 50 total should be plenty.

Bow Tie:

Leave a ~12” long tail for later…

Round 1: Ch-30, being careful not to twist the chain, hdc in the first chain made and in each remaining chain around. Do not join, work in a spiral throughout. (30)

Rounds 2 – 6: Hdc in third loop only of each st around, marking first st of each round with st marker if helpful. (30)

Round 7: Hdc in third loop only of next 18 sts. (18 sts – a partial round)

Round 8: Sc in third loop only of next 29 sts. Sl st to third loop only of final st. (30)

Ch-6 and fasten off leaving a ~12” tail for later.

Press the bow tie flat with one yarn tail on either side. Using the remaining yarn, cinch the center of the bow tie as tightly as possible.

Wind the yarn around and around the center. When desired thickness is reached, tie a knot on the back side and weave in all ends very securely.

Use the beginning tail to make a ch-6. Sew to the opposite side to use as loops for the collar.

Sew the other loop in the same manner.

Depending on the collar, you may find that the bow tie needs another loop to stay put. If so, add one like this…

Along the back of the bow and near the center, attach and create another ch-6, sew to opposite side and weave in all ends. (three loops for collar total: one on each end and one in the middle)

How adorable is that little bow tie?! To make it slightly wider, I suggest starting with 40 or 50 chains instead.

And now for the pretty little flower girls! I love how the flower looks like it’s almost nestled behind their ears if you look from the perfect angle. Cher is throwing some big Frida Kahlo vibes. 🌸

Flower Pattern:

Note: if using the Fsc method, you may find it helpful to leave a ~24” long beginning tail for assembly instead of at the end of the flower. Need help reading a crochet pattern? Head over here!

Row 1: Fsc-48 (or ch-49, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each to end) (48)

Row 2: Ch-1, turn, sc in first st [ch-4, sk-3 sts, sc in next] six times, [ch-3, sk-2 sts, sc in next] five times, [ch-2, sk next st, sc in next] four times. (15 ch sps)

Row 3: Ch-1, turn, [(hdc, dc, tr, ch-1, tr, dc, hdc) around next ch-sp, sl st to next sc] four times, [(hdc, 2dc, tr, ch-1, tr, 2dc, hdc) around next ch-sp, sl st to next sc] five times, [(2hdc, 2dc, 2tr, ch-1, 2tr, 2dc, 2hdc) around next ch-sp, sl st to next sc] six times. (15 petals)

Fasten off leaving a ~24” long tail for assembly.

Spiral the petals starting with the smallest as tightly as you can.

Use the yarn tail to secure the flower going straight through all layers in several directions.

Come up through the center to make certain that smallest/first petal is secure. It really helps to pull the whole thing together.

Feed the yarn back through to the back side to create the loop for the collar. Do not clip yarn.

With what yarn remains, use the crochet hook to create a Fsc-5 (or a ch-5 but it is less secure).

Fasten off and attach to a sturdy portion of the opposite side of the flower to form a loop into which the collar will be inserted. Weave in all ends very securely.
