Do you have a GIANT dog? If you have a Great Dane, Mastiff, Cane Corso, or similarly ginormous furry friend you know how difficult it is to find dog clothing that actually fits. Today we’re changing that by adding a XXXL size of the Dandy Dog Sweater.

Crochet Dog Sweater Pattern for Giant Dogs

The Dandy Dog Sweater (sizes XS, S, M) has been the most popular pet pattern of all time. I did size up that pattern to include Large, X-Large, and XX-Large sizes but over the years I have gotten many requests to further size up the sweater to include even the largest of dogs. I am happy to say that this super popular pattern is now available in such a giant size I had trouble believing it would fit any dog… 😅

Rogi is a 1-year old Great Dane, so still a bit on the “thin” side. The sweater fits him perfectly with a bit of room for him to fill out as he matures. Isn’t he a handsome boy?!

Materials:

Brava Worsted Weight Yarn
-approx. 925 yards for XXXL

Crochet hook in size H/5mm

(6) 1” Buttons

Gauge: 14 sts x 13 rows = 4” using the Thicket/Suzette Stitch

Underside of the Giant Dog Sweater

Sizing:

If the measurements for this XXXL Giant Dog Sweater are a bit too large for your dog, you may need to head over to the Large, X-Large, and XX-Large dog sweater pattern here.

Gauge pattern:

Row 1: Ch-18. (sc, dc) in 2nd ch from hook. * sk next ch, (sc, dc) in next * repeat between * * 6 more times. Sk next ch, sc in last. (17)

Rows 2 – 14: Ch-1, turn, * (sc, dc) in next st, sk next st * repeat between * * 7 more times. Sk next st, sc in last. (17) Measure for gauge.

Always make your swatch larger than needed so that measuring you only count inside stitches, not outside stitches that are not uniform in shape.

Pattern Notes:

The beg-ch of each row does not count as a stitch.

Pattern written using US terms.

Odd numbered rows are “right side”.

Pattern uses the Thicket (Suzette) stitch. See a tutorial for this stitch here.

Note that the photos included depict the large size as in the L, XL, XXL post here. There is a video tutorial for this pattern on the HeartHookHome YouTube channel that you can follow along with here.

  1. If I want to make a sweater for a dog with a neck of 34” and length of 32”, chest of 46”(!) how could I size up this pattern?
  2. Hi! Making the XXXL for a great dane. On row 1 for the chest flap, only 11 (sc,dc) groups are made so the stitch count should be 22, right? (Pattern I have says 24) Only nervous about because its the stitch count for the whole flap. And I have never found a mistake in your amazing patterns! I love them!! Thank you!
