Does your family like to snuggle under a blanket while you all watch your favorite TV shows or movies on the couch? If so, you need an extremely large blanket that the entire family can snuggle under. This family size crochet blanket is the perfect solution! Crochet one using this free crochet pattern.
Family Size Crochet Blanket
This family size crochet blanket is truly ginormous. It is over NINE FEET wide and FIVE FEET tall. 😲 Talk about huge! We comfortably fit five full size humans under this blanket and it definitely makes movie night that much more special.
A giant family size crochet blanket is an excellent way to use up scrap yarn. I’m picturing a multi-colored scrap blanket that will be so loved the kids will want to pass it down to their kids as an heirloom. For this pattern I used Brava 500 worsted weight yarn because the skeins are so large. I used approx. 1,845 yards of EACH of three colors.
If you’ve got a bunch of worsted weight yarn leftovers to use up and don’t pay attention to the yarn color changes as listed in the pattern, it would be such a fun, eclectic blanket for the back of the couch!
Here we are all FIVE holding the blanket up. I can’t believe how big and heavy it is! I do love a weighted blanket. If snuggling with your honey on the couch just the two of you, you may get lost under all that blanket. Ha! But that’s part of why I love it so much!
For this ginormous crochet blanket you can use virtually any worsted weight yarn. Other worsted weight yarns I recommend include Big Twist Value yarn from Joann, Red Heart Super Saver, Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice, and Bernat Value.
Because of the nature of the blanket you can mix and match brands if you like, as long as the yarn weight is similar you should not notice a difference in size or wonkiness in the edges. There is this article on How to Keep Straight Edges in Crochet that will help if you experience this currently.

Materials:

-approx. 1,845 yards EACH of Color A, Color B, and Color C
*if making the smaller, baby size blanket, expect to use around 1250 yards total.

Gauge: One repeat = 3.33” wide
One pattern repeat = 13 stitches wide.
Finished Size:
Approx. 110″ wide and 60″ tall for family size

If you would like to make a different sized blanket, the stitch multiple needed is 13 + 3. For example, a 60″ wide blanket would need to start with 237 chains. (13 x 18 = 234 and 234 + 3 = 237)

The ch-2 at the beginning of the row does not count as a stitch.
