Quick Donation Mittens: Free Crochet Pattern

I can’t believe we’ve already made it to the final pattern in the 2025 Donation Crochet Series. For this installment we are working up super quick, super warm mittens that we can crank out for donations to our local shelters.

Grab your yarn and let’s make some Donation Mittens!

This pattern comes in three sizes: small, medium, and large. For this pattern we are using two strands of worsted weight acrylic together. I am using Brava Worsted (or Tweed) for some and Worsted yarn with remnants of Chroma Worsted I had on hand.

These are a super cute scrap project if you want to stash bust some of your yarn scraps! These mittens really don’t take long at all to make, and we aren’t using much yarn either. Great win for everyone!

Materials:

Worsted weight yarn (held double stranded)
-approx. (220, 240, 260) yards total per pair

Crochet hook in size J/6mm or size needed to obtain gauge

Gauge: 8 sts x 6 rows = 3” square using Half Double Crochet

Pattern Notes:

Pattern written using US terms.

The chain at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch.

Magic Circle alternative = ch-4, sl st to first chain made.

On mitten, even numbered rounds are “Right Side”.

BLO = Back Loop Only

  1. Probably if I just make these up, it'll make sense, but just reading through it, I'm confused. When you add the chain to accommodate the thumb, you chain 6 (smallest size) and then skip 3 stitches. That would be 9 stitches available to become the thumb. But later, after joining for the thumb, the smallest size says there should be 10 stitches, but there are two decreases. That should be 7 stitches left. And if the posts of the hdc stitches on each side are used, that would be two extra stitches, so 11 instead of 9, so then when you do the two decreases, that brings us back to 9, not 10. Like I said, it'll probably make sense when I actually do it, but I probably won't do it with worsted weight doubled, as I don't want them that thick, so I was trying to understand the construction so I could just free hand them. Anyway, you have such lovely patterns on your site, and I've enjoyed the shorts of your walking and crocheting.
