Since publishing my most recent pattern, the Hedonist’s Housecoat, I’ve had several requests for different sizes; small adult, large adult and child size. So, here we are with another free crochet pattern, a child size housecoat! This housecoat is geared toward children wearing sizes 3t, 4/5t, or 6/8.

My son Cameron just turned nine years old but he is on the small side, wearing size 6/8 in most clothing brands. This housecoat is intended to fit on children wearing 3t (if made shorter as instructed below) up to size 8 or so. On this child size of the housecoat patterns, I decided to make it with long sleeves. If you’d like shorter sleeves, simply stop when the sleeves are as long as you like.

Pattern:

Fhdc – 82 (or ch-83, hdc in 2nd ch from hook and each across) (82)
Rows 2 – 44: Ch-1, turn, hhdc in each st to end. (82)
Do not fasten off.

If desired, mark 15 sts and 23 sts in from each side (these will mark your armholes)

First side:
Row 45: Ch-1, turn, hhdc in first 15 sts only (first st marker). (15)
Rows 46 – 62: Ch-1, turn, hhdc in each st to end. (15)
Fasten off leaving long tail.

Back:
Attach yarn at 24th st to create back portion:
Row 45: Ch-1, hhdc in same st and next 35 sts (between st markers). (36)
Rows 46 – 62: Ch-1, turn, hhdc in each st to end. (36)
Fasten off leaving long tail.

You now have three panels and two armholes. Fold the two outside panels in and sew the shoulders using the Mattress Stitch. You should have 6 sts open across the back of the neck.

Front opening edging:
Attach yarn at bottom right (if you were wearing the housecoat) with sl st.
Row 1: Ch-1, hdc (not hhdc) up the front to shoulder, across neck and down the other front.
Rows 2 – 4: Ch-1, turn, hdc in each st to end.
Fasten off and move to sleeves.

Sleeves:
Attach yarn at bottom center of armhole. This is where you underarm seam will be.
Row 1: Ch-1, hhdc in same st and each around. Join with sl st to top of first hhdc. (46)

Rows 2 – 30: Ch-1, turn, sk very first st (where the join was last row as pictured) and hhdc in each st around. (because of the sk you’ll have one less st each row)
*note! if you want a larger sleeve or do not want it tapered, simply crochet in even rounds without skipping first st.
Row 31: Ch-1, turn, hdc in each st around. Join using invisible join and weave in ends. (17)

Pockets:
Make two
Row 1: Ch-16, hhdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each across. (15)
Rows 2 – 13: Ch-1, turn, hhdc in each st to end. (15)
Row 14: Ch-1, turn, hdc in each st to end. (15)
Fasten off leaving a super long tail for sewing to housecoat front.

Position your pockets evenly on both sides and sew to housecoat using a yarn needle. I placed the bottom of my pockets 14 rows up from the housecoat bottom and 8 stitches in from the edging.

I hope your child loves their new housecoat!

  2. I would love to add a hood to this. How do I do that? Just want to keep the rain off my head tak ing out trash. Pacific northwest
    1. Hi Carrie! You would need to start the housecoat at least 10 stitches wider...when sewing up the shoulders you would leave 5 stitches on each side unsewn creating a lapel. Then you could use the hood portion of the painted canyon cardigan pattern as a guide for adding hood to housecoat. Hope that makes sense!
  3. Are the sleeves done in a round or row since I'm loving this pattern and at the sleeves? Do you crochet the sleeves from the right side of housecoat or the inside since it looks so different? Thanking you in advance for your help and love love your site!!!
