My 8 year old is wanting to be a pirate for Halloween this year. Instead of buying an overpriced wig, I decided to crochet him a Pirate Wig for his Halloween Costume!
Pirate Wig Crochet Pattern
For this pirate crochet wig we will need brown yarn, some beads, a bit of leather cord and some red mechanics towels. Oh, and a crochet hook in size H/5mm.
This is a free crochet pattern written in US terms. You are free to sell the finished product, but please do not use my photos to represent your work.
Materials:
Brown worsted weight yarn
Crochet hook in size H/5mm
Note that if you need a larger (or smaller!) size, simply follow my master beanie pattern to make whichever size you need, then add the dreadlocks and other accouterments as noted below.

Adding dreadlocks:
Add your dreadlocks to the stitches in the last row of the hat, leaving about 15 stitches open across the front for the face. Keep adding dreadlocks until each stitch around the back has a dreadlock attached.
Make crochet chains in varying lengths; some with a very tight tension and some with a looser/more “normal” tension. Make some short and some long. Use double stranded yarn to create medium sized dreadlocks. For braids, cut 6 strands of yarn about 30″ long. Pull one side (of all 6 strands) halfway through one stitch along the brim. This will create 12 even strands that you will then braid. Make 3-4 of these braids evenly spaced around.
You’ll need upper dreadlocks too! For these, insert your hook through random stitches from the first three rounds of the hat. Using double strands (for convenience, you could also do single stranded and sew them on but I’m lazy 😉 ) create more dreadlocks until you have 20 – 25 strands in varying lengths around the crown of the hat.
Add Leather and beads:
Using one of the front large braids, insert an end of the leather cord to the center and wrap the leather around the braid until you get to the end. Weave in the leather end as best you can, some hot glue might not be a bad idea but shouldn’t be necessary.
Add your beads to a few of the thinner dreadlocks, and create an entire strand of beads to attach to the top of the hat as well, so that it hangs over the forehead.
Making the bandanna:
Take three of the red mechanic’s towels and a needle and thread (or better yet, a sewing machine) and sew them together so that you have one long strip as pictured. Wrap around the beanie with the bottom edge near the bottom of the hat and tie to secure.
Try making a ponytail with the top dreads and add some makeup! I used brown eyeliner to make a goatee and to create the X under the right eye. Smear some black eye shadow (or eyeliner if you’re confident – my son wouldn’t sit still for that…) around the eyes and, if you like, a tricorn pirate hat.
And now you too, my friend, have an awesome and adorable pirate for Halloween!! I hope you love this pattern as much as I!
