Easy Crochet Dog Sweater for Large, X Large, and XX Large Dogs

crochet large dog sweater tutorial

This free crochet sweater pattern for large dogs, extra large, and extra extra large dogs is perfect for our long-legged furry friends. One thing I noticed while designing the extra small, small, and medium dog sweater pattern is that with larger dogs it can be difficult to get their long legs into conventionally styled dog sweaters. If your tall pet doesn’t like their legs manipulated into a sweater with leg holes – who can blame them? – they’ll love you for using this pattern as it incorporates a flap with buttons. Simply slip the collar over their head and fasten below.

How to make a stylish crocheted sweater for big dogs

This dog sweater tutorial uses the Thicket (aka Suzette) stitch. This is the same stitch as I used in the smaller three sizes of dog sweater pattern, The Dandy Dog Sweater, which means that if you’ve got a mix of breeds and different sizes of dogs, all of them can match! Dawww!

Crochet sweater for large dogs

I love everything about this sweater. It is easy to crochet, it works up fast, and all of the dogs so far have loved it. If you’re needing smaller dog sweaters, you’ll want to use this pattern instead.

Measuring your dog for a crochet sweater

The most important measurement when determining which size to make is their chest measurement. You’ll want to measure the widest part of their chest, just behind their front legs. Because virtually all crochet will stretch as it is worn/used, I have taken this into account when designing this pattern. If your dog is in between sizes, I would go with the larger of the two.

Large Dog Sweater Materials:

For both of my dog sweater patterns we are using Brava Worsted yarn. The color that Jessee is wearing in these photos is “Caution”. Of course, you could substitute with any worsted weight yarn you have on hand as well.

Brava Worsted Weight Yarn

-approx. 650 yards for XL
-approx. 750 yards for XXL

Crochet hook in size H/5mm

(6) 1” (or 1.25″) Buttons

Cobblestone Heather, Caution, and Paprika colorways of three skeins of Brava Worsted Weight yarn.

Gauge: 14 sts x 13 rows = 4”

Gauge pattern:

Row 1: Ch-18. (sc, dc) in 2nd ch from hook. * sk next ch, (sc, dc) in next * repeat between * * 6 more times. Sk next ch, sc in last. (17)

Rows 2 – 14: Ch-1, turn, * (sc, dc) in next st, sk next st * repeat between * * 7 more times. Sk next st, sc in last. (17) Measure for gauge.

Note: Always make your swatch slightly larger than it needs to be so that when you measure you are only including inside stitches, not the outside stitches that are not uniform in shape.

Pattern Notes:

The chain at the beginning of the row does not count as a stitch.

Pattern written using US terms.

Odd numbered rows are “right side”.

Front post/Back post stitches are used for the collar. There is a tutorial for these stitches here.

The body of this sweater uses the Thicket (aka Suzette) stitch. There is a tutorial for that stitch here.

  1. Hi Ashlea! I just love your blog!!! and all the tutorials and patterns! I love crochet (and knitting) but used to think that crocheted clothes could never be as lovely and knitted ones. No more! I love your stitches! I'm currently having a go at your dog sweater :P But I always struggle with written patterns for crochet (weirdly enough I prefer written patterns for knitting, but chart patterns for crochet). You would happen to have this pattern in chart form instead of written instructions? Thank you so much! I love your work! <3
    1. Hi Lizzie! Unfortunately, I do not have any patterns available in chart form. I do have a post on how to read crochet patterns that may help, which can be found here: https://hearthookhome.com/how-to-read-a-crochet-pattern/ or you can always email support@hearthookhome.com and I will do what I can to help!
  2. Hi! I love these patterns! I have a medium size pup that HATES us to touch his legs and paws, and would love to make this button sweater in a medium size! Any advice on reducing the size of the pattern? I tried tweaking around and then I just get lost on what to do with the chest and back flap. thanks!!
    1. https://hearthookhome.com/dog-sweater-crochet-pattern/ Here's the author's pattern for smaller dogs, although if these don't work you could try using the large dog pattern and going down a yarn size.
    2. Hi Jenn! Honestly, I would probably just go down a yarn size and down a hook size or 2, and do the Large sweater pattern. Hope this helps!
  3. Is there any way that maybe you could to a tutorial for the large to xx large dog sweater because of the flap. I'm still trying to learn to read patterns but not great, I'm a visual learner and I'm so confused. If you do thank you ahead of time for taking the time to do so.
  4. Hello I want to start this pattern tonight hopefully, it looks fun!! But my dog’s chest is 30” (lg) but her neck is 20” (xxl)g) what size should I do the pattern. If I did the leg size can I just make the neck bigger?
    1. Hi Erin! I think I would probably do the XL and go up a hook size for the neck portion, then down a hook size for the body. Hope this helps!
  5. I love this sweater and would LOVE to make it but too much of a beginner to do so without a video to guide me. It would be awesome if you had time to make one. I’d even pay for access it if you were to monetize it. TIA!
  7. Thank you so much for this pattern! I just finished one today for my 65 lbs boxer. I used sport wool, double stranded, so it came out to be close to a light worsted. I followed the XL pattern and it is a great fit. I’m not convinced I did the decreases correctly but that is on me. I’ll definitely be making this pattern again for my friend’s golden and possibly one for my sister’s Poodle! I wish there was a way to add a photo because I just love the look of my girl’s purple sweater.
  8. My sister has a Great Dane and she has been asking me for a sweater. Would the xxl be a good size for her dog? I don’t want to ask for measurements because I want it to be a surprise.
  9. My brother’s dog loved her sweater! She’s an 8 month old Golden Retriever. Based on the measurements my brother gave me, I went with the XL, figuring she’s still growing. It fit her well with room to grow. My niece is jealous of the sweater, though, and wants one to match... Any chance there’s a kids’ sweater pattern with this stitch?
  10. Hi thanks for the awesome pattern. I am almost finished crocheting the large size sweater for my dog. However when l went to try it on him l realized it won’t be long enough for him. I only have about 10 more rows to go and need at least 5 more inches of length. I am new to crochet. Any suggestions on how to make it longer?
  11. I’m so confused on the part with the *, **, **. Not sure what code that is, and what I’m to do with it. But I think once I figure that out I might actually be able to understand the pattern better. Please help!!!
    1. Hi Sandra! The stitch sets that are between asterisks are to be repeated the indicated number of times. For example, in rows 2 – 14 it says * (sc, dc) in next st, sk next st * repeat between * * 7 more times...you would put a sc and a dc in the next stitch and skip a stitch, then repeat that stitch set 7 more times. Hope this helps!
  12. I’m struggling on row 2 of the back flap. I understand the chains are extending the flap but I’m confused how And when I am crocheting in them.
  13. For the chest/body, does it matter where you stick the increase (the sc,hdc sc,sc portion) along the row? I get distracted easy so if it’s not that important...
    1. Hi Brooke! I spaced out the increases so they wouldn't stack on top of each other and create "V". As long as you don't put them in the same place every row, I don't think it would be a huge problem. Hope this helps!
  14. Just wanted to let you know your pattern is great. Not exactly for a beginner but not hard either. I followed the directions step by step for the extra large and with only a minor adjustment (I had to size down a little around her belly) it fits my 75lb boxer perfectly! She is very large necked and large chested but otherwise slim. I will be making her another one. Thank you!
  15. Great pattern. Not the easiest but great fit especially with no leg holes. Very easy to put on. Made one for my grand dog Lainey. Thanks!!
  16. Hi I love the pattern was wondering is there a way to make it longer considering am on the decreasing now ? Would be grateful for any tips thank you
  17. I have a do measuring 20 neck an 23 chest so his neck is extra extra large an chest is extra large . Then my other dog is 27 neck and 42 chest can I make adjustments to pattern. Thank you vicki
  18. Hi there! I really want to make this, but I’m already confused on the gauge swatch. I keep following the directions exactly as they’re written, but skipping every other stitch as the instructions say creates a curved shape instead of a normal square shaped swatch. I’ve already tried different hook sizes and adjusting my tension, but no matter what I do I get a curved shape instead of a straight line. I also don’t understand what the stars mean or what “repeat between” means. Please help!! And PLEASE make a full video tutorial!! I am a visual learner, and these written instructions are very confusing.
  19. I love the look. But the picture shows stitches and rows that seem much larger than the gauge given. I've used an E book and matching yarn and still can barely match the gauge for the stitches but not the number of rows. Help, please!
    1. Yes, I’m having the same issue as well. I really don’t understand how it’s possible to achieve the gauge stated with a worsted weight yarn, as I have done everything I can think of. Glad I’m not the only one who is having this problem.
  20. Hi! I am going to make the large size; however, my dog's neck is 17 and her chest 29. How do I make the neck bigger and the chest kept the same as the pattern? Thank you!
    1. Hi Sarah! I would go up a hook size for the collar portion only, then go down for the body. Hope this helps!
  21. Hello I am really struggling with the back flap Row 1. If I sc,dc 27 times, that would be 54 stitches. I don't understand how to get to the stitch count of 90. Would love a video or something with more details. I am still a beginner so the details really matter. Much thanks!
    1. Hi! The stitch count of 90 includes the chains and the 2 sets of of *sc, dc* after the first 16 chains. 16+4+54+16=90 Hope this helps!
      1. Hi Sarah, thanks for this awesome pattern! I am really struggling with the back flap Row 1. I'm using the Large pattern and if I (sc,dc) 27 times in every other stitch the last chain ends on the chest flap. I know that isn't right so I'm not sure what's going wrong. So far my crochet looks just like the photo and fits my dog. I think I'm missing something? Here's what I have- I've chained 16 and attached it to the chest piece 14 stitches in from the front flap using (sc,dc) in that stitch. Then I'm beginning the (sc/dc) in every second stitch after that around the back. But before I reach a count of 27, I'm already back at the check flap lol. Please help :)
        1. Hi Mia! It's hard to say without seeing exactly what going on. If you could send a pic along with your problem to support@hearthookhome.com or to the Heart Hook Home Facebook page, we can try to get it sorted out.
  22. Hello, Question, on the second row (yes, sorry off to a bad start hahah) you say do not turn. Is that a mistake? Thank you! P.s. btw love the sweater you are wearing on the picture
    1. Hi Catalina! You could do the M with a hook 1 size larger, or the L with a hook 1 size smaller. Hope this helps!
  23. Are you able to provide some guidance for making this pattern larger again? My grand-dog has a 26” neck and 38” chest she’s a double mastiff. I’m not sure upsizing my hook will be quite enough to accommodate our girl!
    1. Hi Mandi! My goodness, that is a large dog! I would try going up 2 hook sizes and using a chunky yarn instead of worsted weight. Hope this helps!
  24. Would you happen to remember what size Jessee is wearing in the photo? I was hoping to make one for a friend who has a dog this size.
  25. Do you have a video for this sweater? I am a little confused on the increase. I end up with leftover stitches at the end or way more than I should. Only on round 13
    1. I also would like to know about a video on the big size! The instructions are very confusing and I normally am not that dense!
  26. This is an AWESOME pattern. With 2 dogs that are XL and one that is XXL it is impossible for me to find patterns that fit them. My moms got a dog with an XL chest, but a medium build. This pattern with the buttons makes it way easier for him to be able to wear a sweater since i can place the buttons in farther on the chest flap! Thank you so much for sharing this! 1 sweater down... 5 more to go. I should be done before it gets cold out! LOL
    1. Currently working on the XXL one and I believe the count is off on the back flap. it says to ch 20 and do the sc,dc and repeat 31 times. after all that and finishing it gives me 104 not 106.
  27. hello, thank you for this beautiful pattern. I am a beginner. I am confused with the start of back flap. Does the chain form a loop on this? Row 1: Ch-(16, 18, 20), (sc, dc) in marked stitch Thank you.
        1. I don’t know what to do with the 2 / 16 sc chains please help dose the chain in the right form a loop and the left doesn’t Do you work the chains into the body some how I can’t move from here even read rest of instructions and can’t figure it out please help thanks
          1. The chains are just extending the width of the back flap so that the back can wrap down and attach with buttons to the chest flap. Think of the 2 sets of chains as foundation chains, you will be working into those chains in row 2 just like you would be in a foundation chain. Does this help?
  28. Hi! I'm loving this pattern but I don't understand how to attach the yarn for the chest flap in row 30 (size L). I'm new to crochet and still learning!
  29. I am trying to make this sweater for a golden retriever. My dilemma is which size to make. Her measurements suggest an XXL for the neck but only a L for the body. How could I merge the 2 pattern measurements into a customized sweater?
  30. Thank you so much for sharing this. I have a standard labradoodle and I am making this for him. Will try to attach a pic when done. Thanks again!
  31. Hibi am really struggling with the chest flap. Why are there on 2 rows on the pattern or have a missed part. I mean the part where you attach the buttons to. If the chest flap goes under the dog hoe can it only be 2 rows please help
    1. Hi Jean! The chest flap will be 23, 25, or 27 rows depending on what size you are making.
  32. I am making this beautiful dog coat atm ... I am on the collar ... I am turning when it says turn ... do I need to sew together at the end please? I joined after the first round so it is joined there Thank you ...
      1. Hi Terri! I would probably do the XL size and just use a hook size larger on the collar portion. Hope this helps!
  33. Hi Im having trouble understanding the process after the chest flap, what do I do with the long chains? do i crochet right around the edge? I don't get it..please can you help?
  34. Thank you, I crocheted the jersey for my dog but have a few questions: I use British crochet terms so used a site to see how to do American crochet stitches so am not sure if I made stitches too short. I used the XXL size. The jersey is lovely but needs a little tweaking. Would you be able to help. The collar on the site looks longer than mine (my collar is 2,5"), the finished length of the crocheted jersey is 21". It is also a little tight on his neck and short from neck to tail. My dog's measurements are: Neck 23", Chest 33, Tail to neck 30".
  35. Oh I just saw this great pattern for dogs I think it is great and your stitch marker that you show that you used is darling where did you get it if you said I might of missed I was so loving the photos of your dog. :)
    1. Hi Kay! I actually made those stitch markers! I have a tutorial on how you can make your own fab stitch markers which can be found here: https://hearthookhome.com/make-stitch-markers/
  36. I'm making the XXL sweater. I am up to the chest flap. the directions are as follows: Row 1: Ch-1, (sc, dc) in same st. * sk next st, (sc, dc) in next * repeat between * * (7, 8, 9) more times. Stitch count: (18, 20, 22) I come up with 18 stitches not 22. What am I missing? If I make a total of 11 sc, dc, I would get 22. Is that what I should do? TIA Lynn
    1. Hi Lynn! You will have a total of 11 (sc,dc) stitch sets...the 1st, 2nd, then 9 repeats. Hope this helps!
  37. Thank you for posting a sweater for larger dogs. There aren't many patterns for big furballs. I'm hoping the XXL will fit my small Great Dane.
  38. I love the looks of the sweater and I hope my girl will be happy with it and for some reason I am having trouble understanding row 12. Do I repeat the first part for set sk's then sc set then repeat the whole thing again, or do I do the first part once? Please help.
  39. I have a half basset hound half cocker spaniel. Her measurements require an XL, but she isn't as long as a larger dog. I know I can try doing fewer rows on the back area, but I'm not sure how to adjust overall to make sure the button parts are ok
  40. Hi Ashlea, I've made the smaller dog sweaters for my grandpuppies and am trying to make this larger one for their older dog. My problem is I'm left handed so when I came to the "right side" part I'm not sure how to proceed. And as I look ahead I'm confused. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!
      1. Hi there!! I'm having trouble understanding how to crochet Row 12!! I did it like this... sk stitch, sc/dc next stitch, sc next stitch, hdc/sc next stitch, sc next stitch, sk stitch and repeat like the above!! Is that correct? If so my stitch numbers were way above 86!! I did send an email!! Thank yoh
  41. Hi Ashlea! I Love this Big Dog sweater! It’s Absolutely Perfect and Awesome! Thank You Soooo Much! Kind Regards from Texas
