Everyone loved the Dandy Dog Sweater so much (thank you!), and because one can never crochet too many sweaters for their pups, I decided to design a brand NEW dog sweater pattern, this time featuring the Star Stitch. I’m calling it the Stellar Dog Sweater and I just know your pups will love it.

Stellar Dog Sweater

The Stellar Dog Sweater is a fun, free, and quick crochet pattern that is so stylish and warm! This pattern is available in size XS, S, and M, as my three pooches are modeling here. ♥ See the sizing chart below to see what size you need to make for your furry friend.

Penny is a half Dachshund, half Pit Bull, and 100% awesome. She is a barrel chested beauty that has the cutest little T-Rex arms. She is modeling the medium size for us.

Benson is modeling the small size. He’s about 12 pounds and a bit on the crazy side but he is a good boy and we wouldn’t change him for the world.

Bentley is modeling the xtra-small size. He is a 5 lb Yorkie that thinks he runs the show. 😉

Materials:

Brava Worsted Yarn (Custard, Tidepool, and Fairy Tale colorways pictured)
-approx. 110 yards for XS
-approx. 185 yards for S
-approx. 360 yards for M

Crochet hook in size H/5mm

Gauge: 7 star sts x 5 full star st rows (including the hdc rows) = 4” square

Note on gauge: Always make your swatch slightly larger than it needs to be so that when you measure you are only including inside stitches, not the outside stitches that are not uniform in shape. More on gauge here.

Pattern Notes:

Pattern written using US terms.

For this design we are using the Star Stitch. See a tutorial for the Star stitch here.

If needed, add additional length to the “body” rows before starting the “body tapering”.

To start the star stitch rows, ch-3, pull up five loops total so that you have six loops on the hook. A loop in the 2nd chain from the hook, front loop of the 3rd chain, then pull up a loop in the back loop of 3rd chain, then first two stitches of the row as pictured below.

  1. Ashlea, I need your help please! I have been trying to make this incredible Stellar Dog sweater pattern of yours, but in a size that is in between a small and a medium size (14" neck, 23" chest and 19" neck to tail). I have tried to adjust the pattern and I have had to pull it all out several times:( I made the collar and on the second try of the sweater I even tried to start with a row of HDC increased so I could follow the medium size pattern. The thought then was, once I got there, to somehow not make the chest quite a deep. That didn't really work either. I am completely stopped now at the start of the body tapering I really don't know what to do at this point.?? I know I have to start over and I am just wondering if there is a (relatively simple)way to make the size I am trying to make? Thank you in advance for possibly helping with this, if you have a little time! Michelle
    1. Try using a larger size hook with smaller pattern size. This will change the gauge/size without changing stitch count.
  2. I LOVED the Dandy Dog Sweater so much that over the last cpl of years I make my little fella SEVERAL. I wanted something a little different this year and I stumbled across one of your patterns again! I can’t wait to get started. Pls keep them coming and know that a stranger thinks your creativity and giving spirit is greatly appreciated!
  3. I’m bummed I bought this pattern on Itsy. I really struggled reading the pattern and went rouge trying to finish it. Came out too big. Pulled it out. Came to your website to may be find one that looks easier. So found it under free and photos and instructions are much better, so may try it again.
  4. Just got to row 20 and I’m not sure how to do the star stitch in the back bar of stitch, is there a video to help with this?
  5. Hi I am Margaretha from Sweden and found your site when googling for "dog sweater". I have now crouched two to my Shiba! One of each pattern. Thank you very much for providing those patterns!
  6. Hi, thank you so much for these doggie sweater patterns. Any idea if I want to do one for a Corgi, should I make the medium size?
  7. WHY is my small dog sweater twisting. The seam isn’t straight so by the time I get to the taper it’s all off kilter. The counts are all spot on. I have torn it out three times now.
        1. Mine was doing that too, it’s because the stars move one stitch to the right with every star row. I fixed it by starting the star row skipping one stitch. The stars line up and it’s straight. I’d post a pic but can’t here apparently!
          1. I’m having the same issues too. This is the 3rd time I’ve had to start over. It’s not aligning.
    1. Hi Elaine! Unfortunately, I don't have this particular pattern in larger dog sizes, but I do have the Dandy Dog Sweater for big dogs which can be found here: https://hearthookhome.com/easy-crochet-dog-sweater-large-dogs/
  8. Also I'm having trouble with increasing somehow.. I spent all day working on the body and the first star stitch row I have 35 star stitch plus the one sc, and then I have 34.. I didn't count the stars until the armhole row bc it looked wider and wider, but somehow I still have only 34 stars stitches in row 13. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Help please :(
    1. Hi! Without seeing it, I can't say for sure...my best advise is to count your stitches for every row. You are increasing by 1 stitch every round [the 2hdc in 1st st on hdc (odd) rounds, and the extra sc at the end of the star stitch (even) rounds]. If you need more detailed help, you can email support@hearthookhome.com or send a message to the Heart Hook Home Facebook page.
  9. Hi! Love this pattern, I already made a small Dandy one for a Westie. Now I'd love to make this one for a Border Collie- Blue Heller mix, and I want to make the medium size with a 6 mm hook. Would that work? Or is that too big? I can't decide. Thank you!
  10. I love this sweater. Unfortunately, Harley is much bigger and I don't know how to alter patterns. I'm really a beginner. Maybe someday you'll publish one for bigger gals.
  11. Hi Ashley! Need a tutorial for this one!! Love it but I am pattern challenged. Have a min pin that absoutely no dog sweater has ever fit her and would love to try this one.
  12. We have a mix of Chiauwau and Australian Shepeard. She is a rescue dog and we could not ask for a better one. Lovable, very freindly, likes to play and is about 12" high and 16lbs. We named her Trouble. It was the only name she would answer to. We love her
  13. Is your Dax a pure breed? Or mix? Love the purple sweater. My sister has a mix and we are trying to figure out her aggressive tendencies.
