Have you seen the faux fur pom poms sweeping social media lately? Maybe that’s just my newsfeed, or maybe just because its cold outside, or maybe because I’m a DIY freak but I can’t get enough of them. They only take a few minutes to do AND they make for the cutest little “ears” on hats instead of crocheting them!

How to Make Faux Fur Pom Poms

Making faux fur pom poms is super easy and super quick. First, you’ll need a piece of faux fur fabric (I prefer the ones with longer “hairs” like these but shorter will work also). Remember these are priced by the piece of fabric, and you really only need 1/4 yard (about 9″ across) or less. You can make multiple faux fur pom poms using just this amount of fabric. I picked up a 1/4 yard of fabric (reg. $19.99 per yard) at Joann’s (when they carried it in store by the yard) with a 40% off coupon and paid just $2.99!

I hope you’re wanting this fur pom pom so that you can add it to the Brugge Beanie slouchy hat pattern! It’s just gorgeous and I think the pom makes it!

For fur pom poms you will need:

Faux fur (like this)
Cup or bowl
Scissors
Crochet thread (color shouldn’t matter)
Upholstery needle (with a point)
Polyfil stuffing (or cotton balls or yarn ends!)
Sharpie

To make:

First, lay your faux fur out flat.

Place a cup (or bowl) upside down and trace around it. The bigger the cup, the bigger the pom pom. Cut along your trace mark, being careful not to cut the “hairs”.

Thread your needle and prepare to sew.

This does not need to be pretty, simply baste around the entire circle.

Pull the thread to cinch it up so that a ball begins to form.

Throw some stuffing inside (or use those yarn ends!) and pull the thread some more. Using your string, secure the end.

Now attach your new pom pom to a hat, add a key ring for a key chain, hang one from your rear view mirror… the possibilities are endless!

  1. Is there an attachment to this pompom so I can remove it when washing the hat? If so whwere can I find one. Thanks so much!
    1. I’ll share my secret: I sew a button on the top of the hat- then sew a Elastic hair tie to the Pom Pom and just it around your button. You can remove it wash and as well you can change up your pom w/different colours.
      1. I work retail and we this year we had a hat with extra Pom poms that snapped on. I was curious so looked at it. A large snap the size of a dime or nickel was sewn on.
  2. Has anyone tried using some type of glue on the back side of the fur to keep the fur in place when cutting your circle? I'm only referring to gluing the circle you'd be cutting. With a "loose" glue so it could get into the fibers of the fabric well but not so " loose that it would seep down into the fur itself. Just a thought and I'm wondering if it would work.
    1. I use press ‘n seal as much in crafting as I do in my kitchen. I wonder if it would help to place a piece of it (or even painters tape) on the fabric & cut your circle (through both layers) with an exacto knife. Just a thought...

  8. The least messy way to cut faux fur is to use a razor knife (I use an old box cutter with a sharp blade) or exacto knife. If the blade is sharp it will cut through the fabric easily without cutting any of the fur. Much less messy!

  10. What length do you recommend the faux fur should be as there are an awful lot to choose from (I’m trying to order online).
    1. Crud! Now I want to make all the poms! I bought a few pre-made ones on super clearance at the end of last winter but I was looking for a cheaper option for this year. Thanks, Ashlea!

  12. One thing that wasn't mentioned is that when cutting out fur only cut the fabric. Put the scissors between the fabric and the fur when cutting or you will cut all the beautiful fur off. I used to make things with long fur many years ago and learned this was the best way.
