Would you believe that before now I had never ever crocheted a slouchy beanie? 😮 I could not be happier with the end result of my NEW design, the Back in Brugge Beanie! This crochet slouchy beanie is worked in one piece, and is easily customized to specific sizes. I am in love!

Back in Brugge Beanie

I decided to name this the “Back in Brugge” beanie because that is where the inspiration for this slouchy beanie hit me – during our family Christmas vacation. I always have to have something to work on, so after I finished a grey Painted Canyon CardiganĀ on the airplane (and wore every day of our trip!) I purchased a new Tunisian hook and got to work. I wanted to incorporate two different techniques – regular crochet and Tunisian crochet. STUNNING, don’t you think?

–Red Heart Chic Sheep by Marly Bird in “Sterling” pictured
–Red Heart With Love in “Terracotta” pictured
Crochet hook in size 6mm
Tunisian crochet hook in size 6mm
Faux fur pom pom
-Note! I purchased the grey pom and I made the brown pom myself. Make your own using this faux fur pom pom tutorial!

Pattern Notes:

Pattern written using US terms.

BLO = Back Loop Only

This pattern uses the Tunisian Honeycomb Stitch (THS) which alternatesĀ Tunisian Simple StitchĀ (TSS) with Tunisian Purl Stitch (TPS). Find a video tutorial for the Tunisian Honeycomb stitchĀ here, or watch the video below.

If you would like to make this hat in a size other than adult, all you need are measurements. Check out this chart to see how long (how many rows) to make the brim, then continue adding rows until you reach ~ 2″ past the “hat height” measurement in the sameĀ chart. The more rows you add, the slouchier the beanie!

Hi there - I made this hat and was so pleased how easy it was and how quickly it worked up as this the first time doing Tunisian crochet. Your instructions were concise and clear and the video was an added bonus. Do you have a pattern for matching mittens? - would love to make a pair to match the hat.

Love the look of this hat! This will be both my fist Tunisian attempt and my first slouchy hat! What is the height of the brim before it's folded? I tend to have a tighter tension and am trying to gauge if my brim will be a nice size once it's folded over before I get too far into the project.

In this pattern is there a general rule as how to size the to a child and toddler size, like if the head circumference you should decrease inches by xx amount? I want to make my grandchildren this beanie but I'm not as experienced in adjusted sizes. Thanks

I'm tryingto make my 4 year old granddaughter this hat but the beanie instructions you refer us to is for a circular beanie. I need to know if I make this the circumference of the head or 2 or 3 inches shorter to allow for the stretch? Also the height of the hat? Thanks so much. LeAnn

In the instructions above for beginning the band for the hat it does not mention working in back loops only, where as in video it does.

The back loops are for the brim not the body of the hat.

I need to make one of these for an adult with a 25" head. I checked the chart given in the link but I'm not sure how to sort how many rows to do for the brim, because that chart only has crown circumference. Is there a measurement I should be going for?

Hello. I am so excited to find your Tunisian crochet patterned! Love it! Have you ever done any with the double-ended long hook? I think it’s called crochet knit or crohooking. If you have any patterns using this kind of hook I would LOVE to see them! Please send links! Also where to buy more double ended hooks. I only javelin two sizes and can’t find any more. I think the were by Boye.

Is there a gauge for this hat? I only have 5.25mm & 6.5mm hooks. I'm not sure if I can use either of these. Thanks!

Hi Cindy! There is not a gauge for this pattern. Since you can make this hat to measurements, you can essentially use any hook size...I would probably go with the 6.5mm hook to give the slouch of the hat a little more drape...it may end up too stiff with the 5.25mm. Hope this helps!

Hi! I'm new to tunisian crochet and have some questions regarding what kind of hooks to purchase. Do you think extended tunisian hooks would work with this beanie pattern?...trying to avoid buying multiple sets. Also, which tunisian hooks are you using that are in your pictures?...they are not the same as the ones on your link. Thanks for your help and for providing such beautiful patterns! I cant wait to make this!

Wow, this beanie is super cute. I've never done this stitch before. I've been a knitter and crocheter for 40 years and never tried this. I'm excited to give this a go. Now I just need to buy the longer hooks. I watched your videos and it looks pretty darn easy...thanks to your detailed instructions. And I just subscribed so I can learn new patterns. I guess you CAN teach an old dog new tricks.

When starting the Tunisian crochet part, why is there a ch 1 before doing the return pull through two loops, yo pull through two loops?

Hi Melissa! The chain 1 before the return pass is to maintain the height of the row...it's no different than the chain 1 at the beginning of a row in regular crochet. Hope this helps!

I have made neck warmers in the round with these stitches. I wonder if it could be done with a hat and close it up like you did. I think I’m going to give both ways a try.

I've tried to do this hat tonight, but my Tunisian crochet is not great! I can't control the tension very well. It's a gorgeous pattern too. I've done the brim and will make another beanie using that instead xx
