Oversized Crochet Triangle Shawl Pattern for Beginners
When my friends over at Herrschners let me know about this new chunky weight yarn called Be Whirly and the delicious colorways it comes in, I knew it needed to be a gigantic granny shawl. The “Lake House” colorway really spoke to me and I love those oranges and blues! Look at all of these other gorgeous colorways…
What I really love about this yarn is the way that Herrschners bundles it. Sure, you can get 7 individual skeins for your triangle shawl, but they also sell them in packages of FIVE at a discounted price. Grab one of the 5-pks and two of the individual skeins and get a better bang for your buck.
If you have a different bulky weight yarn, such as Brava Bulky, Lion Brand Homespun, Premier Puzzle, or Mary Maxim Marvelous Chunky, that will work as well. Make sure your total yardage is enough before you get going. The great thing about granny shawls like this is that gauge really isn’t important, and you can stop whenever you feel like it – or you run out of yarn! Perfect for beginners.
Are you ready? This is such a fun, quick design. Of course, you could technically use any weight/size yarn with the corresponding hook size. But a shawl THIS BIG works up fastest with a nice, thick yarn. Let’s do it!

Materials:
Bulky/#5 Weight Yarn (Be Whirly Yarn in “Lake House” used)
-approx. (1190) yards including fringe (7 skeins)
-grab ONE 5-pk and TWO singles
Crochet hook in size 7mm
Gauge: unimportant, but 3 clusters (including 3 ch-sps) in 4” width
Finished Dimensions:
Approx. 36” tall from shoulder to center-most point
Pattern Notes:
Pattern written using US terms.
The ch-3 at the beginning of each row counts as a st.
Magic Circle alternative = ch-4, sl st to first ch made to form circle.

Row 2: Ch-3, turn, 2dc in first st, ch-1, sk-next cluster, (3dc, ch-2, 3dc) in corner sp, ch-1, sk-next cluster, 3dc in beg ch. (4 clusters)
Row 3: Ch-3, turn, 2dc in first st, ch-1, sk-first cluster, 3dc in ch-sp, ch-1, sk-next cluster, (3dc, ch-2, 3dc) in corner sp, ch-1, sk-next cluster, 3dc in ch-sp, ch-1, sk-next cluster, 3dc in beg ch. (6 clusters)
Row 4: Ch-3, turn, 2dc in first st, ch-1, sk-first cluster, * 3dc in ch-sp, ch-1, sk-next cluster * repeat between * * to corner, (3dc, ch-2, 3dc) in corner sp, ch-1, repeat between * * until one cluster remains, 3dc in beg ch. (8 clusters)
Rows 5 through 47 (or to desired length): repeat row 4, adding two clusters to the st count each row.
Fringe:
Cut fringe ~10” long and add one 3-strand bundle to every other Granny cluster ch-sp along the edge. Steam to straighten the fringe.
