How to Crochet a Realistic Soccer Ball

Can you believe we are over the halfway mark for the 2026 Toy & Game Crochet Series?! Crazy! The whole world has been watching the soccer games as they unfold throughout the USA this summer, and I know that my boys have pulled out their old soccer balls and started kicking them around a bit. If your family is also feeling the football frenzy, make them this crochet soccer ball pattern with just one skein of each color.

For this crocheted soccer ball you will need to make a total of 32 motifs; 20 white hexagons and 12 black pentagons. You’ll want the stitches to be nice and tight so that none of the stuffing pops out, so I definitely recommend checking the sizing of your hexagons and pentagons compared to mine to make sure your completed soccer ball will come out a similar size.

Of course if you used embroidery floss and it would turn out more the size of a soccer ball keychain, which would also be super cool! And great for a new soccer loving driver in the family.

The construction on this crocheted soccer ball is so much easier than it appears. The most important thing: never let two edges of the black pentagons touch. That’s it! Just keep connecting the hexagons and pentagons and pretty soon you’ll be looking at a whole, completed soccer ball. Too cool!

Plastic grocery bags or polyfil for stuffing

Gauge: not super important, but one white hexagon is ~2.25” wide

Construction:

With White yarn, sew the shapes together using the Whip Stitch. The most important thing is to make sure no two black edges are touching. Just keep sewing and the ball will take shape on its own.

Stuff the ball when only a few pieces are left. Keep stuffing until it is nice and firm. Sew the remaining seams shut and weave in ends. Feed through yarn inside the ball and clip yarn tails.

Make sure to stuff it nice and full! I did use plastic grocery bags for my first version and my son and I agree that that version is firmer and has a better bounce to it. Reduce, reuse, recycle!
