Monstera Leaf Crochet Pattern

Do you love plants? Do you also love to crochet? Let’s combine the two by making this gorgeous boho Monstera Leaf wall hanging using several colorways of I Love This Yarn, a 48″ long birch wood stick, twine, floral wire and tape, and wooden beads from Hobby Lobby.

Monstera Leaves Wall Hanging

I am a self proclaimed yarn lover AND plant hoarder and I am 100% okay with that. There’s not much more I love in life than tending to my plants, looking for new sprouts, pruning off dead leaves, and taking clippings for new propagations. The monstera plant is among my absolute favorites. ♥

Various potted plants on a plant stand in front of a sunny window.

I have one Monstera plant and not gonna lie… caring for it was a learning curve for me at first. I ended up getting some brown spots on some of the leaves due to overwatering but I think I’ve got the hang of her now! In the beginning of my plant mom adventure, I tended to overwater all of my plants. In the past year or so I have gotten better about learning my plants’ needs in general, and learning how to care for a monstera plant has been an interesting (and, happily, an ultimately successful) experience.

This plant momma’s heart is happy when it sees big, beautiful green leaves. There’s nothing better than seeing a new sprout on your monstera plant and waiting to see how many fenestrations it will have, if any at all. 🌱🧐

How to crochet Monstera leaves

Monstera leaves are quite easy to crochet using this free pattern. There are four different leaf patterns included; a smaller solid leaf, a leaf with two fenestrations, a leaf with three fenestrations, and a leaf with six fenestrations. You can further customize this pattern and the leaves by changing the hook sizes used. This creates a smaller leaf or a larger leaf with that one simple change. Sweet!

Free Monstera Leaf Crochet Patterns

As mentioned above there are four different leaf patterns included in this project. You pick and choose which leaves to make, using whichever hook size you like. For my smaller leaves I used a G/4mm hook, for the medium size leaves I used an I/5.5mm hook, and for the largest I used two strands of I Love This Yarn with a 9mm hook. It is big and beautiful, and bonus: I CAN’T KILL IT! 🤣🪴

There is a VIDEO tutorial below in which I make the largest, six-fenestration leaf pattern. This leaf is the most difficult of the set to crochet because of all of the fenestrations, but believe me when I say that it is still not a difficult pattern at all! In fact, I would go so far as to say that this is a great monstera leaf pattern for a confident beginner. Follow along with me as we make that leaf together. Scroll down to see the video tutorial.

When you are finished with all of your leaves, it is time to add the floral wire to the outside edge so that they keep their shape. I tried several different kinds of wire or plastic, and this floral wire was by far the best option. Crochet as many leaves as desired in as many sizes as desired, then scroll down for instructions on how to add the floral wire.

How to add floral wire to crocheted monstera leaves:

First collect all of your leaves, the floral wire, and the hook size you used for each respective leaf. Overlap two pieces of wire by 1″ or so and tape together so that the ends are covered and they will not come undone. You will crochet around the wire for the entirety of the border, bending the wire as necessary. I find it best to start at the bottom point of the leaf, so that any joins in the wire fall in the most inconspicuous spots. You should need two lengths of wire taped together for any of the small and medium leaves. You should need four wires for the largest leaf, although I do recommend doubling up the wire around the largest leaves (the ones using a 9mm hook and two strands of yarn) for eight wires needed total.

Crocheting around the wire, add another sc row around the leaf, making sure to stretch the leaf a bit as you go so that the floral wire forces the stitches to expand and stay nice and open. We do this together in the video tutorial below, so follow along if needed.

When you get all of the leaves crocheted and the floral wire added, it is time to hang your leaves from the birch stick and get her done!

Double up the twine and cut at 46″ (92″ total, folded in half). We will use this to hang the birch wood stick. Attach 2″ in from each end of the birch stick on each side.

Using the twine, hang the monstera leaves in varying lengths, adding wooden beads to any strands as desired.

That is it! Now it is time to sit back and enjoy your gorgeous Monstera Leaf wall hanging! Isn’t it absolutely fabulous? I hope you enjoy this pattern, and that you’ll share photos with me when you’re finished. Please tag @HeartHookHome across all social media so I can see.

Once you’re finished with this project, if you have any leaves left over or if you’re feeling adventurous, consider making a few with embroidery floss to use as coasters, or cotton to use as boho placemats! How cool would those be?!

  1. Thank you for this amazing project. I did make all and crocheted the wires around them, however, mine are curling inward. Did you block yours? I'm going to block and pin and see if this helps before I hang them.
  2. Hi Ashlea, I absolutely love this design! I too love my plants (and yes i have a Monstera as well). Question I have is...do you think if I used cotton yarn instead of acrylic would I still need the wire? Thank you for your time.
  3. Great pattern, thanks for sharing it! Instead of making a wall hanging, I want to make a long crocheted vine for the leaves to grow on around several rooms.
  4. Amazing! So far I've made the small and medium with ease and am about to start on the large leaf. Thank you very much for these patterns. Greatly appreciated
  5. Ashley, you've done it again! A very cool project with excellent instructions. I wanted to ask about the large leaf pattern, in which you mention using 2 strands of yarn and the larger hook. In the picture of your completed project, it looks like there are two smaller leaves, also with the 6 fenestrations, but clearly not as big as the star of the show. For those, did you just use a single strand and the 5.5 mm hook like with the medium leaves?
  6. Hello! Directions in row 23 of small monsters plant without fenestrations are incorrect. Just a FYI. It comes out uneven with your directions.
  7. Ooooh I can't wait to make this! Love it and love that I can't kill it! Lol Thank you so much for this. I already have a spot picked out for it!
    1. I finally got all my materials! I forgot that I had already purchased the pattern and almost bought it again. Lol I'm sitting down with a cup of coffee and reading through the pattern. I've already watched the video and am very thankful for it. I'm sure I'll have to go back and watch certain parts of it again. This is the most excited I've been to crochet something other than clothing! Thank you so much for your hard work Ashley!
  8. It is a super cool crochet project to make in summer and a great idea. Thank you very much for the pattern! I've pinned it!
