Does your family love to put together puzzles? Some of my favorite memories are sitting around the dining room table, chatting with family while we put together a jigsaw puzzle. If yours also loves putting puzzles together, whip up a set of these Puzzle Piece Sorter Bowls using this easy, quick, and free crochet pattern!

Puzzle Piece Sorter Bowl Crochet Pattern
These puzzle piece sorter bowls snap into place to make a little bowl for holding puzzle pieces of a certain color. Then they lay flat when not in use so they can go with the other toys and games in the game closet. How great is that?! You can easily move sets of colors around the table while working on a particular portion of a jigsaw puzzle.
This is the third pattern in the 2026 Toy & Game Crochet Series. This year we’ll share one new pattern per month that is free and in the toy/game genre. We’ve done a Toy Hammock and a set of Poker Chips so far. I can’t wait to share the various things we’re working up for the rest of the year. See the entire category here.

As written these puzzle piece sorter bowls are approximately 8″ wide. If you want them to be larger, simply continue adding rounds until the square is as large as needed. You could make them 12″ or even 16″!

You can also make as many different bowls/colors as you like. You could make just the core rainbow colors, as I have here, or you could add in pink, orange, shades of gray, variations of blue or blue-green.

For these puzzle sorting bowls we are using My Ami yarn from Herrschners. This is a nice, sturdy, size 3/DK weight yarn that is 55% Acrylic and 45% Cotton. A great blend for this project. They also sell them in multi-packs of various colors which is a great value!

That’s it! How many of these will you make, and in what colors? My little family isn’t doing a lot of puzzles right now, so I’m going to donate my set to the long term care facility where my Great Aunt Elaine lives. She and her friends put together oodles of puzzles and I know they will get plenty of use.
