How to Crochet an Easter Basket

Easter is such a fun time when you’ve got little ones in your life. To see their faces light up when they get their Easter baskets and then the egg hunts, and the dressed up clothes. Just so sweet, and this year we can make it even sweeter with handmade Easter baskets using this free crochet pattern.

At just five rounds total, this basket is sturdy because it uses the Jasmine Stitch, and works up relatively quickly.

It holds plenty of goodies and chocolates, and is a great size for Easter egg hunts too!

Materials:

Mighty Stitch Super Bulky in “White”
-approx. (160) yards or 4 balls

Crochet hook in size 8mm

Crochet hook in size 4mm

Basket bottom (20cm/7.87” diameter, like the larger of the circles here)

Pipe cleaners in matching color (like these, optional)

Yarn needle

Gauge: One puff = 1.25” wide

FPS2TOG: Foundation Puff Stitch two together: Instead of making just one Foundation Puff to start the round, this is essentially beginning with a Jasmine Stitch that consists of two petals instead of three.

Abbreviations:

Ch(s): Chains
Sl st: Slip stitch
FPS: Foundation Puff Stitch
J-st: Jasmine Stitch
St(s): Stitches

Pattern:

Using the 6mm hook…

Row 1: FPS-20, being careful not to twist, join to the base of first st with sl st to form a circle. (20)

Rows 2 through 5: Ch-1, turn, FPS to start the round, J-st around. Join to top of first FPS with sl st. (20)

Do not fasten off.

Handle:

Where still attached, FPS2tog over the next two “eyes” of the Jasmine stitches.

Crocheting around pipe cleaners (optional) FPS until the length of the basket handle is as long as desired.

Find appropriate placement on the opposite side of the basket, FPS2tog and fasten off leaving enough yarn for sewing into place.

Sew the basket handle and weave in all ends.

Hard Bottom Prep:

Using the 4mm hook…

Attach in any hole around the wooden circle. Ch-1, sc in each st around. Fasten off leaving a long enough tail for sewing the basket to the hard bottom.

Construction:

If needed, stretch the first round of the basket to be the same size as the basket bottom. Position in place, using stitch markers to keep it from moving. Use the yarn tail from the “Hard Bottom Prep” to sew the basket to the base.

Weave in all of the yarn tails and you’re finished! Just five rounds of Jasmine Stitch and easy peasy!

  1. So this basket does NOT have a crocheted bottom, only the purchased cardboard/plastic as listed in the materials. Might there be a crocheted bottom that could be used?
