Shanti Sweater for Big Kids: Free Crochet Pattern + Companion Video

Have you tried the Shanti Sweater pattern yet? If not, the kids sizes are a great way to get your feet wet, then you can decide to make one for yourself as well! Use this free crochet pattern for big kids and/or the companion video to make one today.

SHANTI SWEATER FOR BIG KIDS

This gorgeous sweater is a top-down, easy-to-crochet pattern featuring the Herringbone Double Crochet. This stitch is easy to learn and also gives great texture. My favorite!

Sizes included in this post: 4/5T, 6/8, and 10/12. The little kids sizes can be found in this post, along with the companion video, and the adult sizes can be found here.

If you have never worked a top-down sweater pattern before, you’ll be surprised at just how quickly they work up. You’ll start with the neckline and build onto that, creating a yoke that will slip over the head to lay around the shoulders and upper arms. Then we’ll close off the armholes and continue adding length to the body. Once finished, slap some sleeves on and call it a sweater! I truly think you’ll love this new sweater and it’s minimal sewing.

When you get this sweater finished and you are familiar with the pattern and the construction, make one for yourself in adult size! The adult sizes of the Shanti Sweater start with XS (which doubles as the largest youth size) and ranges up to 5XL.

The free patterns in child sizes are broken into two posts: one for little kids (UP TO 2/3T) and then big kids (this one). The next size up after that is the adult XS.

  1. Dear Ashlea, I have done some calculations and wanted to ask your take on them. My kid's measurements are as follows: shoulders 14.5 inches, length of a jumper (from shoulder down): 16.5 inches, chest/ hips round 27 inches. If I calculate from your gauge, the size 6/8 is 17.25 inches or so long (from the yoke, not the shoulder) and 26 inches round. It is not that far off! Rather than going for size 10/12, I was thinking that starting off with 15 stitches more would give me the width I need plus a little bit of give. I saw that you start increasing every 12 stitches, so I would do that for the additional stitches. Do you think it could work? Keep well in these difficult times!
