I hope you’re ready for the SMALLEST size of the It’s Shawl Good cardigan! This is the 12 – 18 month size, and would probably work just fine on a 9 month old as well. All of the child sizes are published individually, and for free, right here on Heart Hook Home!
It’s Shawl Good CHILD Size (12 – 18 Month)
This is quite possibly the most adorable baby ever. Look at those CHEEKS! Just precious! Here’s a short video of me modeling my latest adult size. All sizes are linked below, if you would like the printable file including ALL children’s sizes, you can find that on Ravelry here. Thank you!
The CHILD sizes for the It’s Shawl Good pattern are as follows:
Size 12 – 18 Month (this one!)
Size 2/3T
Size 4/6
Size 6/8/10
Size 12/14/16
These cardigans are intended to span multiple sizes. Add or remove length as desired; the armhole openings should fit all children within each respective size range. Find the adult size of this pattern here.
Materials:
Crochet hook in size J/6mm
Size 3/lightweight/DK yarn (about 220 yards)
*Thin cotton suggested, such as Sugarwheel cotton cakes, Caron cotton cakes, or Bernat Baby Cotton.
Note! Lightweight acrylic CAN be used – like Lion Brand Cupcake (pictured here), or other lightweight “cake” yarns but the drape may not be as nice as the “weightier” lightweight/size 3 yarns listed above.
Gauge:
After row 6 the width of the piece should be about 7’’ and the height (from row 1 to the center stitch of row 6) should be about 4’’. See photo after row 6.
Pattern notes:
• Pattern written using US terms.
• Use a stitch marker to mark the center most stitch of each row.
• On the hdc rows, go around the ch-sp from the previous row instead of into the ch – it’s faster!
• Place first st of each row in same as turning. (the beginning chain does not count as a stitch)
• When counting stitches, make sure you count each triple crochet AND each chain stitch.
• Add a hook & eye closure, a button closure, a tie closure, or no closure at all.
• I have highlighted the parts that require more attention using RED.

Repeat rows 2 & 3: 2 more times.
Finish off with a row of single crochet without turning. Fasten off and weave in all ends.
Add fringe (optional)
Make fringe (like this). Take 2 – 3 strands and attach them every other stitch along the bottom hem.
As noted earlier, this 12 – 18 month pattern would work for 9 month olds as well, you would just want to remove one or two sets of the treble crochet rows from the length.
I hope you just love the It’s Shawl Good pattern! The adult size can be found here, if you would like the printable file including ALL children’s sizes, you can find that on Ravelry here. Thank you!
