Best Yarn Box Subscriptions

23 Yarn Box Subscription Services

If you love yarn, chances are you’ve heard about – or seen ads for – various monthly yarn subscription services. While many have come and gone, I’ve updated this list and was able to dig up a total of twenty-five boxes! Yowza!

What is a yarn box?

Have you ever heard of Birchbox, Ipsy, or FabFitFun? Yarn boxes are exactly like those, but for fiber artists. After subscribing, boxes containing yarn, maybe some knitting needles or a crochet hook, a pattern, stitch markers etc, are mailed to your home on a monthly, bi-monthly, or quarterly basis. Is this real life? Am I in heaven?

How much do yarn subscriptions cost?

Yarn box subscription prices vary greatly. The least expensive you’ll find for a physical box is $10 per month (as of this posting), and the most expensive is upwards of $90 per box – or more. Most prices include shipping depending on where you’re located, but you’ll want to check before subscribing.

Which box is best for me?

The yarn subscription service you choose will vary based on your individual desires, your experience working with fiber, and your desired outcome. Some boxes are great for beginners because they come with beginner-friendly patterns and/or supplies a new crocheter may not have yet tried. Then there are other, sometimes more expensive boxes, that only send you high-end, hand-spun, and/or hand-dyed yarn. If you’re going to treat yourself, or purchase a quarterly subscription as a very thoughtful gift (wink, wink!), a fancy yarn subscription box may be just what the doctor ordered.

  1. Iam looking for a birthday gift for my sister. This would be great for her I just have some question
  2. I used to get the Paradise Fibers monthly subscription and I adored it. However, I don't think it is only for spinners. I don't spin, but I do a lot of needle felting and frame loom weaving and their fibers are PERFECT for that! The vibrant colors and huge amount you get for the money is fantastic. And they always include goodies that any fiber artist can use along with a monthly themed sheep sticker. I would still be subscribed if I weren't trying to cut down on expenses.
  3. I got the Leither Collection deluxe box for a year and a half. I loved it! The hooks were cool, patterns were good, yarn was hand dyed to the monthly theme, and a couple of doo dads were included. Whatโ€™s not to like!!
  4. I used DGY for a while, and I Loved it for ethical reasons - recycled fibers, supports people in India. The variety of fibers amazed me. Banana fiber yarn? Surely, it necessitated some strength to crochet with, but it's a sustainable fiber and worked up into a truly unique piece. The colors of silk yarn I received really spoke to me. Nothing ever had a bad odor, and I always received a little treat.
  5. Thank you for this list Ashlea. I actually subscribe to ALC Yarn Club, Nicky is so awesome. She hand dyes her own yarns and also has suprises with your monthly package. She even offers a regular box and a premium box. She also has a private Facebook group for her subscribers where we do CAL's etc. A great fun and friendly group of ladies. I am extremely happy with her monthly subscription service, it never disappoints. I also have a wool allergic and I have zero issues when I use her yarns, they are soft and squishy and so easy to crochet with. She has us spoiled with gorgeous yarn.
  6. Avoid KnitCrate. It is the 8th of July and still waiting on June yarn. I will cancel my order as soon as possible (will use my points). Also they have a Price increase for $ 12.00 without notice. Sorry but I will leave you.
  7. Avoid KnitCrate!! I subscribed to KnitCrate and immediately there were issues with shipping, etc. When I contacted them, they explained it was because they were having trouble with international shipping. I asked why they didnโ€™t avoid that issue by supporting American yarn companies and offering American products. I got a long email that was filled with excuses โ€” cost, etc. They said they must use foreign suppliers to keep their costs down. Yesterday I got an email that they are streaming their offerings AND both increasing the price of each kit and adding a nearly $12 fee for โ€œinternational shippingโ€. So now they are charging more for foreign yarn than they would probably have to charge for American-made yarn. In yesterdayโ€™s email they practically pled with customers to be patient and continue supporting them. Sadly, they expect American shoppers to support *their* American business, but they arenโ€™t willing to, in turn, do the same thing. Iโ€™ve unsubscribed, of course, and strongly urge you look elsewhere.
  8. Check out Less Travelled Yarn, Sarah is Fantastic! I would say its for Intermediate to Advanced Knitters, and HOLY WOW! The YARN THO!!!! Its well worth it, and competitively priced. travelingyarn.com I think it is... I thought I would add that one to the List! Oh! And also Tree House on Etsy also does a Monthly! She has Fantastic Yarns also. I love Both these ladies! They are INSPIRED! Just like YOU!
  9. I am new to the world of knitting or crocheting. I just want a beginners kits with the needles and something not too overwhelming as a starter - preferably in Canada so Iโ€™m not paying extra shipping charges. Any suggestions?
    1. Check Knit Me. They are in canada and have lots of beginner and intermediate knitting kits. The yarn subscription comes with yarn, a pattern and an extra, but not the needles.
  10. Thanks for the great list Ashea! I subscribe to Ficstitches, KnitCrate, and just picked up Destination Yarn. Have subscribed to LeitherCo. Ficstitches is quarterly, you get locally sourced yarn and doodad, a pattern, and a book. KnitCrate I will be canceling as soon as Iโ€™ve used my points. They no longer send in boxes, which is fine but they no longer send the booklets; those are now digital. To get the physical booklet and box you have to pay extra. LeitherCo is wonderful. I cancelled only because of a financial situation I had at the time; will probably resubscribe! And she has mystery advents throughout the year too!
  11. I've been subscribed to Crochet Surprise for around 2 years now and I have never been disappointed. Always enough yarn for the project and always some left over. Great instructions, great extras and the tea is great if you are a tea drinker. Also great customer service!
  12. Although some of these boxes look great, sadly I'm allergic to wool and most, if not all, the boxes only contain some type of wool yarn. I have seen that the Leither subscription lets you choose non-wool fibers so I may try that one.
  13. I have tried the Knitkrates . Their box is so nice . You get 2 full skeins of beautiful yarn . it is a high in yarn . Plus some times hooks . Plus a small book of patterns . The only thing is they were charging twice in the same month . But they fixed it and you can cancel anytime .
  14. I subscribe to Knit Me in Canada (knitme.ca). She designs her own patterns and always has the most beautiful yarn. She has now come out with a budget-friendly box that will include free ravelry pattern links for knitting and crocheting. Plus shipping is free.
  15. Thanks for the list! I subscribe to Knit Me (knitme.ca) from Canada. She designs all her own knitting patterns and always sends beautiful yarn. She has just come out with a budget-friendly box too, that will have links for knitting and crocheting patterns and shipping is free!
  16. Mountain Colors has a nice annual subscription. I think it is bimonthly. Signups start in November of the year preceding the subscription. A skein or two of yarn plus a pattern to use it and a surprise. I enjoyed it.
  17. I tried Good Yarn and was extremely diapponted. Literally one small ball of yarn, poor instruction and the yarn odor was terrible. Yarn still sitting there. I am confident yours would be incredible.
  18. I've subscribed to Crafty Housewife Yarn's monthly merino braid & couldn't be more pleased. Erin is always helpful & everyone makes you feel like an old friend!!
  19. I've tried Darn Good Yarn and was disappointed also. I may try the Mary Maxim or check out some others. I like the boxes because it gives me a chance to try out different kinds of yarn. Thanks for the list!!
  20. I tried Darn Good Yarn for a few months and was very disappointed. Boxes were late, were missing items, substitutions were made, or failed to arrive at all. Customer service was none existent. I've also subscribed to Mary Maxim and their boxes are pretty good! Nice amount of yarn, and patterns were interesting, and not always the scarf and cowls routine. I am currently subscribed to Leither Collection for the $16.00 yarn subscription and am satisfied - they offer nice, quality yarn. Annie's Hook and Needle Club isn't too bad, as far as yarn quality and pattern ideas, but personally I think their price is a bit steep for what you receive. My best advice to anyone thinking about subscription boxes is to watch several reviews on You Tube first. Someone, somewhere, has subscribed to the box you're considering and it's a great heads up!
  21. There's is also the Little Box of Crochet here in the UK. A different little project each month. https://www.littleboxofcrochet.co.uk/
  22. I did try the Darn Good Yarn subscription and was not a fan. I received a small amount of yarn to make a scarf, it was a very tiny scarf. Just did not enjoy it. I appreciate you doing the work for us because I thought about trying to join another subscription. You are the best!
  23. Thank you so much for listing all these. I have been wanting to join one and was unsure of the ones available. I have heard of one not listed it is Destination Lane. Thanks again.
  24. What about Mary Maxim monthly kits, knit or crochet available, unless you listed it under a different name. I subscribe to both.
  25. Thank you for the great list! I'm always looking for different clubs to try. I subscribe to Jimmy Beans Indie Club, LoopsClub and Wool & Honey's Sleeping Bear Yarn Club. They all have delicious yarns. Also the Darn Good Yarn club is a great one.
    1. I tried Darn Good Yarn's club and occasionally you get a nice skein of pretty yarn, but mostly it's crappy yarn in tiny amounts with bad patterns. The yarns smell terrible and you have to air it out after spraying it with Febreeze. Lucky Violet Color Company has a nice yarn club. It's about $35 a month but you get great hand dyed yarn and beautiful patterns. Thanks for compiling the list. I didn't know Mary Maxim had a club. I think I'll look at the Leather Collection and the Crochet Surprise boxes, too.
