Free Cross-Body Bag Crochet Pattern Using Plastic Canvas
I love the idea of a close fitting cross-body bag that I can throw my phone and wallet in when I’m just running to the store for a gallon of milk or other quick errands. Having my things right next to me instead of putting my regular size purse in the shopping cart feels safer.
The next installment in the 2023 One Skein crochet series, this bag uses less than ONE skein of Dishie cotton – even if you choose to use the same yarn for the backing instead of the rainbow using scrap yarn as I have done. Woot! Love that!
See all of the 2023 One Skein patterns to date at this link. 🙌
This bum bag can have a zipper or a button closure, although the button is MUCH easier to sew on than the zipper. If you’re feeling adventurous, make one of each!
Did you craft with plastic canvas as a kid? As a child, I learned how to use yarn with plastic canvas to create fun designs with the help of a family friend. That experience definitely helped my creative side grow!
Plastic canvas designs are a fun, easy way to incorporate crafting into your home. Whether that’s the classic tissue box covers we all remember from decades ago, or a new twist like this cross-body crocheted bag, you’re sure to love the end result.
If you love yarn and crocheting, you’ll love this plastic canvas project! That being said, there is an option to crochet the back of the bag instead of using the plastic canvas.
We are using 100% cotton yarn from WeCrochet called Dishie. This is my favorite cotton. Of course, any worsted weight cotton would suffice.

Fasten off leaving a super long tail for securing to bag body.
Using the Tapestry needle, whip stitch the back to the bag.
Sew front to back around the entire bag, then weave in all ends. Sew button on front and ch-10 for closure. Attach securely. Done!
For Plastic Canvas back…
Cut plastic canvas sheet to size. Shown is 29 squares wide and 45 blocks tall.
Using the black yarn (or scrap rainbow yarn as I have) and with a tapestry needle, create any design for the back of the bag. I chose to do colored blocks that are 5 squares wide and 5 squares tall – done in a diagonal color design. This gives a total of 7 blocks wide and 11 blocks tall.
When finished, and using a 2mm crochet hook (or the smallest you can fit into the holes), attach at any spot of the square.
Ch-1, sc in each space around entire canvas, placing 2scs in each corner st. Fasten off using a super long tail for attaching to bag body.
Line up the bag with the plastic canvas backing. Use stitch markers to hold it all in place.
Using the Tapestry needle, whip stitch the back to the bag.
(Tip: It’s okay if you need to use every other or every third stitch!)
Sew front to back around the entire bag, making sure the corners are nice and secure, then weave in all ends. Sew a 1/2″ button on front and add a ch-10 to opposite side for closure. Attach securely. Done!
