Bonfire Blanket Cardigan Crochet Pattern

When I first saw the new Timeless Tones yarn I knew it had to be a blanket of some sort. After swatching several stitches and playing with the yarn for a weekend, I also knew it had to be a cardigan. So, here we are with what I can only describe as my favorite cardigan pattern ever: The Bonfire Blanket Cardigan!

Is it a blanket? No. Is it a cardigan? No… It’s a BLANKET CARDIGAN! When dreaming up this design I wanted it to be THE statement piece, and I think that was knocked out of the park! I can not wait to wear this out and about literally everywhere this cold season.

When making this blanket cardigan, we start at the neck and work our way down. After we make the armhole row we’ll switch over to a ripple chevron pattern that grows as we go. The longer the cardigan gets, the wider the chevron gets. By the time we get to the end the twirl factor is out of this world. I LOVE THAT!

Business on the top, party on the bottom. Even better? It’s all just double crochets. Once you get to the ripple chevron portion there are decreases and increases, but this is a fun, easily memorized pattern that turns out gorgeous!

Bonfire Blanket Cardigan Yarn

For the original design I used Mj’s Timeless Tones yarn in the “Warm Cocoa”, “Oat Milk”, “Sunflower Field”, and “Soft Thyme”. These four colors together are simply perfection and the yarn is so nice to work with. The drape is lovely and I just know you’ll love it, too.

You’ll notice that the entire yoke, bust, and sleeves are made using the main color of yarn, or “Color A” which for me was the Timeless Tones yarn was the “Warm Cocoa”. I also used that colorway for the edging to bring it all together.

In the pattern, yardage is given in total yardage. It is also broken down into Color A, Color B, Color C, and Color D. Please note that the number of colorways you use and the length of your cardigan, and the yarn you use will influence how much yarn you use for yours. I always recommend buying extra yarn, but in this case I would pay the closest attention to the Color A yardage, as that is the majority of the design. The other colors are roughly thirds, which is broken down in the chart, but please use make sure to get plenty of yardage in case you decide to do different color blocks, row counts, etc.

Using Other Yarns and Yarn Weights

For the second version of the Bonfire Blanket Cardigan I used Brava Worsted in the “Dove Heather” for the main color and a ton of worsted weight scrap yarn and partial balls for the remainder of the body. This feels like a coat of many colors because it quite literally is. ♥

Bonfire Blanket Cardigan Sizing

Now that we’ve discussed the construction and yarn, let’s talk about sizing.

This cardigan ranges the usual sizes for a Heart Hook Home pattern: XS through 5XL. There are several inches of positive ease in this design, meaning that it is slightly oversized. As designed, it is not intended to be buttoned, but it could be by simply adding buttons to the opposite edging. It is intended to be very flowy and twirl-worthy, but I think it would also be cute with a belt and boots.

Sizing: (XS, S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL) = (35.5, 38, 42.5, 47.5, 52, 54.5, 59, 63.5, 66)” finished bust measurement (includes edging).

It is important to note that the MJs Timeless Tones yarn is a DK/Size 3 yarn and the other two made with worsted weight yarn. I did make a size smaller than I normally would have when crocheting with the Worsted Weight yarns. The best part about a top-down raglan sweater is that you can try it on as you go.
