Flat Granny Blanket: Free Crochet Pattern

The Flat Granny crochet stitch tutorial has been one of the most popular crochet stitch tutorials on all of Heart Hook Home. So many love it because of how easy it is to learn, how mindless it is to crochet, how quickly it works up, and how gorgeous it looks when finished. When you put it like that, there’s no wonder this stitch is so well loved.

All that to say… if you’re looking for a free pattern for an easy crochet blanket, this is it!

Flat Granny Stitch (in Rows) Crochet Tutorial

Made using only double crochet stitches, this is a very beginner-friendly blanket pattern. Check out the video tutorial and written instructions on how to crochet the Granny Stitch in Flat rows here, or scroll down to get started right away on the free throw size pattern.

This blanket can be worked in one color, in granny stripes, or using a variegated yarn as I have done here. We add a simple, yet elegant, border in a contrasting color which really sets it off.

As written, this blanket is a medium sized throw measuring approx. 54” x 68” (137 cm x 173 cm) before adding the small border. This is a great size to cuddle up on the couch or to lay at the foot of the bed.

The sizing of this blanket can be adjusted using the information below listed in the “pattern notes”. See more on crochet blanket sizing here.

Other great yarn options include Brava Worsted (the huge Brava 500 skeins would work nicely), Vanna’s Choice, Mary Maxim Value yarn, Red Heart, or your favorite worsted weight acrylic.

  1. Your chsin row looks so neat and your chain spaces are not wide. Any tips? I'm having issues with the beginning chain into first row. My seems sloppy.
    1. Hi Dianne! It will depend on how many yards are in each skein you are using. The yarn I used had 252 yards per skein, so I needed 12 skeins.
      1. Thank you for this information. Hobby lobby has yarn on sale. This afghan will be a thank you gift for a wonderful friend.
  2. Thanks for this pattern. I was looking for an afghan pattern that was easy and fun. What color/brand yarn did you use for the border?
  3. So I often get confused when trying to “simply” decrease the size. I understand reducing the number of initial chains but you say to do this in multiples of 4. So if I’m understanding, I want my blanket to my 44 x 44. The original size requires 210 chains. My size would then require 10” less or 44 chains less?
