Child Size Easy 30-Minute Beanie Crochet Pattern

This pattern is very similar to the adult size Easy Peasy 30-Minute Beanie, except that we stop increasing earlier and we don’t complete quite as many rows. That means it’s even faster to make! This is a great, quick pattern to have your little one choose the color. You’ll be finished fast enough to hold their attention, and they get the hat in the exact color the wanted. How fun!

We are using two strands of worsted weight yarn together. This makes the beanie work up that much more quickly and it allows for such versatility. I just love it and I hope you will too! Throw a pom pom on top for a little extra pizzaz.

blue and gray 30 minute crochet beanie

Materials:

Worsted weight yarn (in one color or two different colors)
-approx. 150 – 175 yards total

Crochet hook in size K/6.5mm

Finished Beanie Dimensions:

About 9” across brim when folded, 7.5” from crown to brim. If needing for a smaller child you could go down a hook size to a J. Alternatively, if you’d like the finished beanie to be a little larger you could go up to an L crochet hook. Need to size it even more? We have a handy dandy chart for that!

Pattern Notes:

The ch-2 at the beginning of the row does not count as a dc.

Pattern written using US terms.

The chain-2 at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch.

  1. I know this is way older pattern, but I just found it on Pinterest, and I want to make my 18 month old granddaughter some beanies for this winter. She is larger than most babies her age, so first, will this fit her, or should I go down to a J hook. Second, can I use a five weight yarn instead of two four weight yarns together? Thanks!
    1. Hi Elaine! So for round 4, you will put 1 dc in each of the next 2 stitches, then 2 dc's in the next stitch. Then repeat that sequence for the remainder of the round. I am sorry, but I do not have a video for this...
  2. I made this for my Grandson and he looked so cute in it. How would a scarf look in this pattern with the double yarn?
  3. I made this today for my great grandson. Used gold and gray yarns. Looks fantastic. I had some trouble with the crab stitch using two strands of yarn so I used one strand and it looks great.
  4. The lovely and adorable idea that you are giving to crochet lovers. It's so Impressive and useful. thanks for the attractive and beautiful ideas.
    1. Hi Lillian! Do you mean the Crab Stitch? I have a tutorial with video here: https://hearthookhome.com/the-crab-stitch-crochet-stitch-video-tutorial/

  6. I absolutely hate this “magic” circle! I’ve been crocheting for over 35 years and can NOT get this thing to work. I have wasted more time and yarn trying to figure it out. I will stick with the chain. I’ve never had any problem with lose holes in my work. Other than that I love this pattern.

  7. I have made many beanies using patterns similar to this but never with double strands of yarn. I cannot believe how many times I've frogged this. I can't believe it has caused me so much trouble. I wonder if the two colors are really confusing me. I'm on the right track now and hope it turns out well. I've made many of Breann's patterns. Thank you and keep up the good work.

  10. I just love this pattern! Thank you so much for sharing it! <3 I have made a lot of these beanies as charity for children that are ill or in refugee camps! You can see all of them at my Instagram account @wildemompysslar
  11. LOVE THE PATTERN, THANKYOU. What size yarn would I use if I don’t want to hold 2 worsted weight together? Thanks in advance
  12. I just finished my first hat and I feel the one side looks good but the other side the bottom looks a little wonky...not sure what I did wrong. It's to big on my 5 yr old so I hope it fits her friend who is 6 and has big hair. About to make another one and hope it fits my little girl.
  13. Thank you for such a wonderful and easy pattern! my mother in law taught me how to crochet. last September she passed away unexpectedly and I was the lucky one to get her vast amounts of yarn.. I volunteer and make blankets and kitty beds for a local shelter but wanted to do more! I found your pattern to make hats for local children in need of warm winter hats and will drop them off at local schools when the weather turns cooler :-) I find peace knowing her "stash" of yarn is going to a good use and I can do what she loved to do, Crochet :-)
    1. I don't know how to crochet but I made this today and it turned out awesome.! It took me alot longer than 30 min though. I had to watch videos on how to do a double crochet, and magic loop. Lol. I used bulky (6) yarn. Trying to use 2 strands seemed a little over my head. Thank you for the easy pattern! My expectations were low. I can't believe it fits and doesn't look like a beginner made it. Haha!
  14. Thank you! I used this as my first ever hat and finished it in one evening. Used your sizing page for a 6 Mo old and the Crab stitch tutorial too. Great instruction and it turned out so nicely. Can't wait to see my granddaughter in it.
  15. I loved this pattern! I'm a beginner and it was easy to follow, and came out just how I hoped.. except one thing... It was waaay too small... but I should have measured my boys heads before I started, and used your chart.. other than that, I'm super happy with this!! Thank you :)
  16. Your site is my go to for crochet patterns because they are ‘as advertised’. I don’t get half way through my project and realize that the pattern I’m working isn’t working up like other sites say they will. Thank you so much for publishing your patterns for others to use!
  17. I'm confused by the ch2 at the beginning of each round if it doesn't count as a dc. When the end of the row says to sl to the beginning dc, do you actually sl to the the top of the ch2 or do you skip the ch 2 and sl to the dc?
    1. I'm having trouble finding patterns for ages 6-12, after toddler/child to preteen. Sweaters, hats etc. Do you know of any?
  18. This pattern was as advertised! I made one in no time flat. Cute as a button. Thank you so much for your time and excellent instructions!
  19. About what age should this fit? I’m trying to make a few for operation Christmas child and they separate boxes ages 2-4, 5-9, 10-14. Thanks!

  22. Hi, loved your 30 min beanie. Made some for Xmas 2017 family. Need a scarf to match, so will try one myself. Have passed your pattern to sister and Neice. Both are so pleased, we are all still new crocheters and your patterns have been wonderful. Thank you so much.
    1. Hi Kelly! This is actually two strands held together. Both were very old yarn from a friend of mine (from the 80s) so I don't have the colors. :(
