Welcome to the first of the 2023 One Skein series! This series of crochet patterns will all use one skein of yarn or less. This is an excellent way to use up stash yarn and to make something cute/useful in the process. Needless to say I am very excited about this new collection of crochet patterns!

Many people think macrame when they think homemade plant hangers, but that does not have to be the case! This crochet plant hanger pattern is available in two sizes and uses basic stitches like single crochet and double crochet.

The beautiful, open stitches make up what is called the “Woven Lattice” stitch. I used this stitch when creating the Maddie Ruana last year and I am still in LOVE with the look of it. I love it so much I decided to make it into the plant hangers you see today.

If you’re anything like me you’ve got a love for two things: yarn and plants. My plant obsession started in earnest several years ago. In that time my plants have multiplied, some by cultivating clippings of my healthiest plants, and some by spontaneously jumping in my cart at the store. 🤣

In my opinion the best plant hanger crochet patterns are those that are a bit holey, with a boho vibe. You could even add a tassel to the bottom, or wooden beads to the crochet chain (hanger) for added pizzazz.

This crochet plant hanger pattern is super quick to make too. It uses very little yarn and comes in two sizes, small and large. The smaller size of this plant hanger fits pots around 3.5 – 4″ in diameter. The larger size holds pots around 5 – 6″ in diameter.

If you would like to use these as plant cozies instead of hangers, simply omit the chains used as hangers. Win!

For this pattern we are using a cotton yarn or a cotton blend yarn. The point of the 2023 One Skein Series is to use up yarn you already have on hand, so I am using Dishie 100% cotton for some, and CotLin yarn for others.

Technically speaking any yarn should work but the cotton aspect helps it from stretching out with use.

Hangers:

Chain to a length of (35”, 45”) *or until desired length is reached, keeping in mind that the length will be halved during construction.

Fasten off leaving a long tail for attaching.

Count (12, 16) sts over and attach in next st leaving a long tail for securing. Chain to a length of (35”, 45”) or to match first chain length.

Attach each chain to the opposite side of the hanger as pictured going through the key ring both times. Isn’t this just the cutest plant hanger you ever did see?

  1. I love this pattern so far, but I’m a little stuck on round 18 of large version: the pattern doesn’t match what I did previously in round 17 (rep of 11). It seems my stitches are off by a round, where it says to sc around ch-sp on 18, there isn’t one there for 4 sts, and when it says to sc in next 3 sts, there is a ch-sp. What did I do wrong?! Thank you :)
  2. I just made my first one and oh my I LOVE IT SO MUCH! It worked up fairly quickly once I got the hang of the repeated pattern in each row. I slid some beads on the hangers before I secured them which added a fun touch. I'm about to crank out another one to give a friend for a housewarming gift. :) Thank you so much for this pattern! I usually lose my place and get frustrated with patterns with a lot of chain spaces and skipped stitches but yours is so well written and easy to follow that I had no problems at all. 10/10 love it!
  3. Why am I stuck on round 12 of the large. It doesn't seem to make sense since there is only 1 SC between all the chain spaces ...
    1. Hi Lisa! Have you watched the video? Row 11 of the small version in the video is basically the same as row 12 in the large version...just change the ch-3 in the video for a ch-5 for the large. That row is at about the 15:50 minute mark.
  4. Hi Ashlea, I've only recently discovered your site and I really like the stuff you put out. You have very useful projects and provide directions and tutorial videos that are perfect for my level of experience. I've done at least one size each for all of your 2020 cloth patterns, and more than half of the 2021 household items patterns to this point (I'm still trying to find what you graced us with in 2022, but I digress), so when you announced the 2023 series and this pattern dropped, I couldn't wait to hit it. The small plant hanger pattern worked out perfectly and I love the way it turned out. That said, I'm afraid I'm a bit stuck on the large option pattern. Having rounds 13-16 be repeats of rounds 8-11 is not working for me. If that were the case, round 12 would mimic round 7, right? I'm wondering if it should rather be rounds 13-17 being repeats of rounds 7-11, and then pick up with the instructions you currently have for round 17, but it is actually now round 18. I'm absolutely not an expert designer (or even a novice one, for that matter), but what I'm suggesting seems to make more sense to me.
    1. Hi Jim! I am so glad you have been enjoying my patterns! 2022 was the car series which can be found here: https://hearthookhome.com/tag/2022-car-series/ And you are absolutely correct about the discrepancy on the large pattern...it has been corrected. Thank you so much for bringing it to my attention =)
  5. Hi!! I love this pattern but got stuck on round 8... The beginning mentions a dc, but none of the rest of the round mentions dcs...???
  6. Ashlea, could you please include a picture of the top part of the crocheted unit, with the ring? Thanks. Love, love, love your ideas! You're the BEST!
  7. Your plant hanger is beautiful but I’m curious about watering. How do manage that? Do you remove the pot? Love all your patterns, Leslie
