Have you ever been out and about and needed to measure something? This is a daily occurrence for me. Sure, those retractable measuring tapes are perfect, but let’s go above and beyond with a crocheted cover to turn it into a Retractable Measuring Tape Keychain!

How to make a keychain holder for a retractable measuring tape

Retractable Measuring Tape Keychain Crochet Pattern

Not gonna lie, I’m just a bit in love with this new pattern. As a person that sews, crochets, and dabbles in woodworking I am constantly feeling the need to measure something. Where did my measuring tape go? Oh that’s right, it’s hanging right on my keychain. 😉

I just know this measuring tape keychain would be a HIT to sell at craft fairs, to give as gifts to your crafty mother-in-law or sister/brother/friend. Speaking of mass producing these, they only take about 10 – 15 minutes to make, they use just the smallest bit of cotton AND you can get the keychain clasps in bulk to save as well!

Here’s what you’ll need:

Materials:

Round 2: Ch-1, 2hdc in each st around. Join to top of first hdc with sl st. (24)

Round 3: Ch-1, hdc in each st around except last st (23)

Fasten off leaving long tail for sewing.

Side 2…

Round 1: Magic circle (or ch-4 and join to form circle) Ch-1, 12hdc in circle. Join to top of first hdc with sl st. (12)

Round 2: Ch-1, 2hdc in each st around. Join to top of first hdc with sl st. (24)

Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Construction:

Line up sides and sew evenly around using the mattress stitch. Just go back and forth between the two sides all the way around. About half way place the measuring tape inside and position the pull tab so that it lines up with the missed stitch space from side 1.

When you get to the last stitch make sure you leave enough of an opening so that the pull tab can move freely. On that last stitch, grab your key chain and sew through that ring a few times to secure it.
