Kids Flowy Top Free Crochet Pattern

This kids top is perfect for throwing over a swimsuit or a tank top, and is sure to be well loved by any that wear it. The general consensus from the testers of this pattern (and their children) is that this is an excellent top for “flying”, and for being a princess, and for twirling. It doesn’t get much better than that! ♥

I decided that for this free crochet pattern, I wanted to start with a size 4/6, but by popular demand I have included both the 2/3T and the 3/4T. The reason I was hesitant is because we simultaneously need the neck opening to be large enough to fit over the head and small enough that it will not slip off the shoulders. This does seem to be an issue for the smaller two sizes, and if this happens to you, see the pattern notes for fixes – or send me an email and I’d be happy to help!

The pink yarn pictured is Galileo from WeCrochet. I absolutely LOVE this yarn color, and the sheen of this yarn is to die for! That being said, this yarn is suggested as hand wash only, so if you are concerned with how messy your child is, or how frequently it will need washing, a cotton blend may work better for you. Something like Cotlin or even Curio #3 crochet thread – assuming you can meet gauge.

Lightweight/DK/Size 3 yarn (Galileo in Calliope colorway pictured)

Note that the Galileo yarn is labeled as a 2 weight, but I was able to meet gauge. As always – definitely check your gauge before beginning!

If possible, check the sizing of the neck opening after completing the first several rows. The circle should both fit over the head (and will relax a bit as the piece is completed) while also NOT falling off the shoulders. If, after completing your kids flowy top, the neck opening is too large, simply attach yarn at the neck opening and add a row to close it up. Need help? Shoot me an email!

The size used for pattern photos is the 10/12. The 4/6, the 6/8, and the 10/12 sizes all start the same, the only discrepancies you may find in photos will be when making the 2/3T and 3/4T sizes, as the neck opening is smaller for those two.

I am trying this pattern for the first time (trying to make matching tops for my daughters). I just finished row 2, and my increases are stacking - is that right? My increases look like a v-stitch, and in the second row, the v-stitches are in the chain space of the v-stitches from row 1. I can't tell from the picture if it is like that in the sample. Thank you!!
