The sun is shining, and the birds are chirping, and I’m wearing my new Maddie Ruana, which means that I can conquer the world! That may be a bit dramatic, but wear this gorgeous ruana over a tee and jeans for a dinner date, or over a swimsuit this summer and you’ll feel like you can conquer the world, too!
Maddie Ruana
What I love most about the Maddie Ruana is the drape, the feel of the fabric, and the way it makes me feel confident no matter the occasion. Isn’t it gorgeous?
The Maddie Ruana comes in two sizes: one size and plus size. See sizing info below near the materials list.
We are using CotLin yarn for this project (yarn substitutions included below!) which is a cotton/linen blend. Because of this it drapes beautifully and would be great for warm weather to keep you covered but cool.

If you want to use this as a swimsuit coverup (which would be SUPER CUTE!) I suggest making a drawstring using either an I-Cord, a regular chain, or a cord made using a Lucet Fork. This is by far the fastest method, and creates a more consistent cord. Practice makes perfect, of course, so make sure to check out this Lucet Fork tutorial.
We are using the Woven Lattice stitch for this pattern. It consists of just chains and single crochets, so it is not too difficult once you get in the groove. Check out the full written and video tutorial for this stitch if you want to practice first!
Sizing:
The “one size” fits up to about 1XL and the “plus size” fits up to about 5XL.
Materials:
Cotlin (size 3 Cotton/Linen blend)
-approx. (1375, 1650) yards
Crochet hook in size H/5mm
Other yarn choices:
Other great yarn options would be Truboo from Lion Brand, Premier Cotton Fair, Spinesse, or even Brava Sport which is an acrylic. I do recommend sticking to a cotton or bamboo blend if possible but acrylic would work fine if you’re stash busting.
Note that you will want to block this ruana after crocheting it, no matter which yarn you choose. Here’s a full tutorial on how to block crochet.
