It’s Shawl Good CHILD Size (6/8/10)

I swear my friends with daughters must just love me. LOL! Always asking for models, but then they get to keep the finished product, so I suppose that’s a win-win! My lovely model here typically wears a size 8 in children’s clothing. This cardigan has plenty of room for her to grow into it. If she wanted, we could add a cute button to the front for her to keep it closed. It is just adorable either way!

Here’s a short video of me modeling my latest adult size. All sizes are linked below, if you would like the printable file including ALL children’s sizes, you can find that on Ravelry here. Thank you!

Materials:

Crochet hook in size J/6mm
Size 3/lightweight/DK yarn (about 550 yards)
*Thin cotton suggested, such as Sugarwheel cotton cakes, Caron cotton cakes, or Bernat Baby Cotton.

Note! Lightweight acrylic CAN be used – like Lion Brand Cupcake (pictured here), or other lightweight “cake” yarns but the drape may not be as nice as the “weightier” lightweight/size 3 yarns listed above.

Gauge:

After row 6 the width of the piece should be about 7’’ and the height (from row 1 to the center stitch of row 6) should be about 4’’. See photo after row 6.

Pattern notes:

• Pattern written using US terms.
• Use a stitch marker to mark the center most stitch of each row.
• On the hdc rows, go around the ch-sp from the previous row instead of into the ch – it’s faster!
• Place first st of each row in same as turning. (the beginning chain does not count as a stitch)
• When counting stitches, make sure you count each triple crochet AND each chain stitch.
• Add a hook & eye closure, a button closure, a tie closure, or no closure at all.
• I have highlighted the parts that require more attention using RED.

  1. HI! Thank you for sharing this pattern. I have made 1 sz 12/18 mo, 2 sz 2/3T, 1 sz 4/6T, and 1 sz 6/8/10. I'm currently on my second6/8/10 and plan to make 3 more in that range. These will all be for nieces and great-nieces as Christmas presents this year. I have 2 teenage nieces that I may make them sleeveless versions if I have time. I started with the smallest size and quickly got the rhythm of the pattern. I bought the Yarn Bee Sugarwheel Cotton yarns for all of them, and they are working up great.
  2. I do not normally have problems with reading a pattern especially when there is a video but this one is throwing me..I just frogged rows 6-17 because row 17(I think) wasn't working right in the middle. My stitch count was off back to row 6 where the stitch count was right again. I do row 7 and the stitch count is short 2 stitches....I think maybe the stitch count on your written pattern for size 6/8/10 is off by 2 for rows 7 and up. I crocheted it exactly as it's shown in your video and it just isn't working with that stitch count.
    1. Hi Pearl! I have double checked row 7 and the stitch count is correct. If you like, you can send an email with a photo of your piece including row 7 to sarah@hearthookhome.com and we can get sorted out.
  3. I'm sorry Ashlea, I didn't mean to be rude. I'm just so frustrated with this pattern (still) that I could cry. This pattern should be easy and I've been crocheting a long time and I just can't get this. I was up to row 22 but then lost after that with just the total number of stitches in each row because I was going with the *repeat so many times* number in order to know which stitches to do that middle part. I tried figuring that out but it looks like the hdc rows that part increases by 2 on each side each time you do it but the treble crochet rows I'm completely lost. Tried to do some again today and am still lost. I wonder if you or any of the others in here can help. HELP! I'm stubborn and hate to give up on a pattern
  4. Actually I'm afraid (and hate to say it) but this pattern seems to be very poorly written and is very confusing. For instance I'm on row 15 and it doesn't say anything about doing stitches into the middle stitch of the middle cluster of 3. I've been crocheting for over 50 years and can't figure this row out. I hate to get to 17 where it seems like everyone is having a problem. CAn you help with row 15 and 17. And if we do need to go to the video it would be nice if there were timestamps...and to anyone who says I'm being rude, no, I'm trying to say all this in a friendly way and get help...no rudeness intended it's such a beautiful cardigan I'd love to make it for a couple of my dgd's
    1. Hi Ruth! I will admit that the armhole row can be a doozy! On row 15, we are only working 1 stitch into the center stitch itself, but a series of increases on either side of that center stitch, which is why there is no mention of that marked center stitch in particular. If you haven't already, I highly suggest watching the companion video which explains in detail how those center stitches are done for that row. At minute mark 38:30 is where I start the armhole row, and at about the 44 minute mark is the start of the center...the video can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqESpU5Nxb4&t=2069s I hope this helps you, and if you run into any other problems feel free to message men(pictures are always helpful) on the Heart Hook Home Facebook page or by email at support@hearthookhome.com
      1. Thank you Ashlea, I finally figure that out but now I think there might be a mistake in row 19 because in every other tc row there was a stitch in the stitch right next to the 3 center stitches and in row 19 there is not...instead on one side there's a skipped stitch and same in row 21 so ? maybe you forgot another repeat of of the ch1, tc in the next stitch that's between the ** **?

    1. I am with everyone else. But I get frustrated real fast, if pattern is giving me problems I figure out what to do so it does come out, but I spent 1 wk in trying to find my mistake on 12 thru 17. Im just glad to hear it was not me crocheting wrong. I just stopped doing could not find a video on it, only on a magic ring, do wish I could of finished my project
  6. Dear Ashley, I bought a rainbow colored yarn last week and this pattern is lovely to work with. Thank you so much. I followed the video and pattern exactly I mean all chain numbers and stiches are the same count. The gauge was true. I didn't increase or decrease additionaly but both in front of the shawl and back tail is larger than the picture. Like I increase too much. For example in the pictures the front of the shawl comes straight from top to bottom but for my shawl it is like 2 wings come top of each other, like wrapping. Also at the back there is a tail. Do you have any idea? Thank you
  7. Hi i am just wanting to clarify after row 21 the two row sequence is rows 21 & 22 repeated until i reach row 34? I am on row 23 (21 repeated) and am coming up short, 2 sts remain unworked before i do the ** ch1, tc in nxt **. If i proceed my ** to ** part is not at the 3hdc in centre of previous row. I have double checked my st count for every row and i am on point for all rows. Any insight on how to proceed will be greatly appreciated. I am doing size 6/8/10 pattern. Tyvm
    1. I think she forgot to mention that you no long repeat 29 time but have to add 2 repeats to each side on all the hdc rows
    2. I think she forgot to add in there that you no longer repeat to 29, that you have to add 2 more repeats to each side in the hdc rows
  8. Hi. Thank you for the pattern. This is the first written pattern I have ever followed and I found it very simple and instructions were great. I have just one question please. What length should this size be when finished? I am on row 34 but mine is a lot shorter than the one in the pictures. Thank you x
    1. Hi Ria! Mine was approximately 24 inches in length at the point. You can simply keep adding rows if you need to make it longer.
  9. My granddaughter wants me to make this shawl for her (size 6-8) in the colors shown in the picture. What is the exact name of the yarn: Lion brand cupcake (what color). My granddaughter is very fussy and I want to get it right! Thank you.
  10. Hi Ashlea, I want to thank you for sharing this awesome pattern in so many sizes! I've been working along your video tutorial as well as the printed instructions for child size 6/8/10. I just completed row 34 and have the correct number of stitches. It seems a little short to me and I'm considering adding a few more rows. I was wondering if you could share the measurements of this shawl at row 34 for this size? Thanks a bunch!
  11. I’m stuck on row 15 I’ve done the 8 Tc and then ch16 then ch1, Tc 3 times and then 8 Tc again and the ch16 and 8 again but before I do the 3 Tc at the end I end up having 3 sts left.. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong and I’ve watched the video 3 times already I’m doing the 6/8/10 size
    1. I have a similar problem, but instead of ending up with extra stitches remaining, I end up with too few stitches in the row. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong, but I only count 111 instead of 115 stitches.
      1. Hi Nikki! I am sorry you are having trouble. If you can, send me a pic of what you have to either the Heart Hook Home facebook page or email and we can try to get it sorted out.
      2. Same here. Pattern is fine until this row. I have tried everything. Added stitches took away just messes up the other rows.
  12. Thank you for sharing this pattern, it was well written and the video was such a huge help for any oarts where I was uncertain. This was my first cardigan and first tome doing sleeves and I feel like it turned out great thanks to your instructions. I will be making many more for the girls in my life!
    1. Hi Grace! You can find the post for the adult version here: https://hearthookhome.com/its-shawl-good-cardigan-fringed-triangle-shawl-with-sleeves-crochet-pattern/
  13. For some reason I'm coming up short on row 17 and can't figure it out. I have the right amount on row 16 but where you 3 tc in a row isn't in the center it's off on row 17. What am I doing wrong?
    1. Hi Kelly! If you haven't watched the companion video for this, I highly suggest it. If after watching, you are still having trouble then feel free to message me on the Heart Hook Home facebook page or through email, and we can get it figured out The video can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqESpU5Nxb4
        1. The video is very informative and could show her where her mistake was. YOU didn't have to be so rude to someone who took the time to make the companion video to help out in the first place. Shameful
    2. I'm having the same problem with row 17. I've tried following the pattern and the video and for some reason I still can't make it work. Did you get it figured out? What am I missing?
  14. For some reason I'm coming up short on row 17 and can't figure it out. I have the right amount on row but where you 3 tc in a row isn't in the center it's off. What am I doing wrong?
    1. I think the count of 20 in row 17 should be 24. I'm having the same problem. Also, in row 16, I think there is a missing instruction to ch1 in the repeated instruction for working hdc's in the armhole (i.e. it should say ch1, skip 1 and loosely hdc instead of just skip 1 and loosely hdc); I read on here that there is a video, so I'm going to see if she has a different count or does something differently in the video, otherwise, I'll probably just keep going with the pattern so that it looks right without worrying too much about the counts.
  15. Hello, this is a beautiful shawl! When do you expect to have the 12/14/16 sizes up? Looking forward! Thanks ~ Dee
