This spare tire cover is the newest installment in the 2022 Car Series on Heart Hook Home, and I just love how bright, cheery, and chic it is! Grab your cotton yarn and your crochet hook and let’s whip up one of these flower spare tire covers for warm weather. 🌺

What I love most about this spare tire cover is the pop of color and the flowery center. We are using almost the same beginning as the Marigold Sky Granny Square and building onto that to build little petals that grow to cover the tire. Isn’t that lovely?!

I plan to use my cover in the summer time, when the sun beats down and the music is bumpin’, and the colors poppin’. This is definitely a statement piece for your car if you’ve got a spare tire! Great for Jeep lovers like my friends and I’m sure these would sell at craft fairs too. 🤩

Side note – My friend Sarah gave me this adorable little keychain and I decided to name him Alfonso and hang him from my rear view mirror. I smile every time I look at him! ♥

This spare tire cover crochet pattern is made using dimensions of a typical spare tire. While tire sizes can vary, the elastic we use at the end helps to make the fit more universal than a one-size tire only. Laid flat, the tire cover is approx. 27″ in diameter and about 9″ deep.

how to crochet a spare tire cover

We are using Dishie Cotton for this pattern – a 100% cotton. You will need three different colors of yarn, mostly of the third color that spans the majority of the tire. You could technically use acrylic yarn but it will stretch out while cotton yarn will not. For that reason I would stick with a 100% cotton if possible.

Materials:

Dishie 100% cotton yarn in three different colors (Creme Brulee, Jalapeno, and Begonia pictured)
-approx. 1200 yards total
-approx. 75 yards COLOR A (Begonia pictured)
-approx. 50 yards COLOR B (Jalapeno pictured)
-approx. 1075 yards COLOR C (Creme Brulee pictured)

⅛” elastic (~75” long when not stretched)

Crochet hook in size G/4mm

Sewing needle and thread (for sewing elastic)

Pattern Notes:

Pattern written using US terms.

Do not turn throughout.

Beginning chain does not count unless otherwise stated.

Pop = 5dc in same sp, remove hook, insert hook front to back into first of 5 dcs made, hook working loop, pull through, Ch-1 to close the stitch. (See a video tutorial for the Popcorn Stitch here)

Picot = Ch-5, sl st in top of last st made.

Tc = Treble Crochet (tutorial here)

Check your sizing against mine as stated at specific points in the pattern. Adjust hook size up or down as needed to obtain gauge. More info on gauge in this post.

  1. Ahhh help, I'm on the final row. I'm not sure how the elastic goes. Do I sew it into the crochet stitches? How does it stay. Do I single crochet to the pre vious double crochet row with the elastic inside it????
    1. Working around the elastic, you will put your sc stitches into the dc's of previous round.
  2. I respect the effort but the cover is concerning. It covers the airbag if your car is equipped with it, which is a major safety equipment, that means its performance could be hindered and that wouldn't be good. The airbag unit is located inside the horn. So a cover that doesn't cover that piece would be better.
    1. Hi! I totally agree, which is why this cover was designed for the purpose of using only when parked to help protect the steering wheel from getting blistering hot in the summer and, as stated in this blog post, I do not recommend using while driving. =)
