Trick-or-Treat Bag Crochet Pattern

Halloween is such a fun time of year. Now that we have the little grandbaby and he’s turning into a young little man (almost 3 already!), he’s ready to Trick-or-Treat for real. This year he’s going as “Captain America” and I can’t wait to see his little costume and how excited he gets for the candy!

This trick-or-treat bag is made from a traditional Tunisian Crochet Granny Square. You could try with a solid traditional crochet granny square as well.

For this pattern I am using My Ami yarn, a 55% acrylic/45% cotton blend from Herrschners that will hold up beautifully. I am using the “Lime” and “Tangerine” colorways. Other great yarns to use would be Dishie from WeCrochet, Premier Home Cotton, Bernat Softee Cotton, or any other size 3 or size 4 cotton or cotton blend on the Virtual Yarn Aisle here.

As for the My Ami yarn that we are using, you can grab two single skeins of each color for your bag or grab the multi-pack at a much better price overall. I am using the Craft Cotton in “Eggplant” to make a solid color version. I’ve got some more to go on the body before adding the straps, but I’m loving it so far! I’ll be sure to share photos of it on social when I’m finished.

Make sure you’re following along! I share on YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok.

Round 1: (Loop on the hook currently counts as stitch number one) YO pull up loop in next st, YO pull up loop in next st. Using Backward Pass yarn, ch-1 and knock these sts off the hook. (Side one made) * TSS in next st, YO, pull up loop in next st, YO pull up loop in next st. Knock these sts off using the Backward Pass * (side two made) repeat between * * two more times. (20)

Round 2: TSS in next 2 sts, YO, TSS, YO, * TSS in next 4 sts, YO, TSS, YO * repeat between * * two more times, TSS in final 2 sts. (28)

Round 3: TSS in next 3 sts, YO, TSS, YO, * TSS in next 6 sts, YO, TSS, YO * repeat between * * two more times, TSS in final 3 sts. (36)

Round 4: TSS in next 4 sts, YO, TSS, YO, * TSS in next 8 sts, YO, TSS, YO * repeat between * * two more times, TSS in final 4 sts. (44)

Rounds 5 through 16: continue adding rounds in this manner (ending with 140 sts)

Round 17: TSS in next 16 sts, * YO, TSS, YO, TSS in next 16 sts, TSS2tog, TSS in next 16 sts * repeat between * * two more times, YO, TSS, YO, TSS in next 16 sts, TSS3tog. (144)

**the final stitch is a TSS3tog because it uses the first stitch of the same round to complete it, and is necessary to get the correct stitch multiple/count in the following rounds.

Rounds 18 through 36 (or to desired height): TSS in next 16 sts, * YO, TSS, YO, TSS in next 16 sts, TSS3tog, TSS in next 16 sts * repeat between * * two more times, YO, TSS, YO, TSS in next 16 sts, TSS3tog. (144)

Finishing Round: Pull Backward Pass yarn through Forward Pass yarn, sl st around. Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Straps:

Center the strap over one chevron peak so that it will be the width of 7 sts. Pull up a loop (this counts as stitch number one).

Row 1: TSS in next 6 sts. Ch-1, Backward Pass. (7)

Rows 2 through 34 (or to desired length): TSS in each st across. Ch-1, Backward Pass. (7)

Sl st across, Fasten off leaving long enough tail to sew strap in place on opposite chevron peak. Repeat strap one more time and sew into place.

Finishing:

There are three openings: left/center/right. Attach at any stitch and ch-1, sc around. Join to top of first st. Do this for all openings to clean things up and to help strengthen the straps. Weave in all ends and you’re finished!
