Is it a sweater? Is it a poncho? It’s a poncho with sleeves and the kids are going crazy for them! Grab your hook and let’s whip up a 4/6 size of the On Point Poncho!

Child size free poncho crochet pattern

4/6 Youth Poncho Pattern

I just love how comfortable these sleeved ponchos are to wear. Because of these sleeves it feels fitted, but the bottom half feels like a roomy poncho. Poncho perfection! 😀

Sizes of this pattern include:

Newborn
3/6 Month
9/12 Month
12/18M
2/3T
4/6 Youth (this one!)
8/10 Youth
10/12 Youth

One thing I have noticed on these ponchos is that the length needed varies greatly per child. Simply stop when the length is sufficient, or add more rows for extra length if needed.

Materials:

Lightweight/Size 3/DK yarn (w/o fringe)
-approx. 440 yards for 4/6

6mm hook (or size needed to obtain gauge)

Stitch marker

Gauge: 12 dc sts x 8 rows = 4”

Pattern Notes:

Start at the top and work your way down.

Pattern starts at the center back and is joined in rounds, turning each row.

Place first stitches of each row in the same space as join. (the ch-2 does not count as a stitch)

Odd numbered rows are “right side” and even numbered rows are “wrong side”. When finished with row 1, you could add a safety pin to remind you which side is which.

  2. Hi! I love the look of this and so did my 5 year old granddaughter. "Ninn you make me this for school"? So of course, I spent this afternoon working on it. I worked the bodice through to the sleeve hole , following the pattern to the letter. Somehow, its 5 stitches longer on one side than the other, and i counted stitches SO many times. Also, there's no way this is going to fit over her head. It barely fits on my wendy walker doll and Rue is bigger than her , although not by very darned much...lol. Has the pattern been updated or changed? Are there stitch count totals for each row available? I'm utterly confused and this comes from someone who's been crocheting nearly 50 years. I have no clue what I did wrong! HAAALLLLP before the child finds out I screwed it up!
    1. Hi Lona! I am sorry you are struggling with this! I double checked the armhole row and the numbers are correct, so not really sure what is happening there. If you would like, you can email me at support@hearthookhome.com or message me on the Heart Hook Home Facebook page...a picture is always extremely helpful...and we can try to get this sorted out. As for the neck hole, it should measure approximately 21 inches around if that is any help.
  3. Is the 4/6 poncho much bigger than the 3t? My granddaughter is 3 I made her the 3T but she wants me to make her a bigger one so she can wear it longer. I love the poncho made 2 and the kiddos love them.
    1. Hi Linda! I am so glad you are enjoying the pattern! You could try the 4/6 and go down a hook size...that would probably make it closer to a 4t or 4/5. Hope this helps!
  4. Doing the size 4 to 6 ..at the end of row I have 145 instead of 142..would anyone have the number of stitches for each row so I could see where I went wrong instead of pulling it all out Thanks
  5. I didn't see a child size 7, is there one and I missed seeing it? I made the newborn one....OMG, SO CUTE!!! Thanks.
    1. Hi Deb! You can use 4 weight yarn as long as you can match gauge...you may need to go down a hook size. Hope this helps!
  6. I would love to make this in a size youth 14/16 for my grand daughter will there be separate pattern for this if not then how would I go about making this size or should I just go to a XS adult. Thanks in advance! this will definitely be put in my save folder to make for the fall.
  7. I’m making a medium OPP. On row 17 I do have 160 stitches. On row 18 I can’t come out to 172. If I’m really just adding 4 more stitches. What am I not getting?
    1. I'm making the size 4/6 and at the end of Row 10 I should have 143 st, but I only have 138. I've frogged and counted several times, and still just get 138. Should I increase by 4 st on row 10?
  8. I found 2 mistakes in the pattern for 4/6... in the Sleeve part, "Row 1... Ch2, Ch2.... should the second Ch2 be turn? Still in the sleeve part there is no row 3
