Here we are, already at the largest pattern size of the It’s Shawl Good cardigan for kids! I hope you’re as much in love with this design as I am!

It’s Shawl Good CHILD Size (12/14/16)

This size is the largest of the child sizes, but if you are making for a petite adult, this will also be the size for you! Here’s a short video of me modeling an adult size “medium”. All sizes are linked below, if you would like the printable file including ALL children’s sizes, you can find that on Ravelry here. Thank you!

The CHILD sizes for the It’s Shawl Good pattern are as follows:

Size 12 – 18 Month
Size 2/3T
Size 4/6
Size 6/8/10
Size 12/14/16 (this one)

Find the ADULT size of this pattern here.

Materials:

Crochet hook in size J/6mm
Size 3/lightweight/DK yarn (about 800 yards)
*Thin cotton suggested, such as Sugarwheel cotton cakes, Caron cotton cakes, or Bernat Baby Cotton.

Note! Lightweight acrylic CAN be used – like Lion Brand Cupcake (pictured here), or other lightweight “cake” yarns but the drape may not be as nice as the “weightier” lightweight/size 3 yarns listed above.

Gauge:

After row 6 the width of the piece should be about 7’’ and the height (from row 1 to the center stitch of row 6) should be about 4’’. See photo after row 6.

Pattern notes:

• Pattern written using US terms.
• Use a stitch marker to mark the center most stitch of each row.
• On the hdc rows, go around the ch-sp from the previous row instead of into the ch – it’s faster!
• Place first st of each row in same as turning. (the beginning chain does not count as a stitch)
• When counting stitches, make sure you count each triple crochet AND each chain stitch.
• Add a hook & eye closure, a button closure, a tie closure, or no closure at all.
• I have highlighted the parts that require more attention using RED.

Complete the 2-row sequence until you reach row 36. To make sure you’re on track, here are the stitch counts for each of the rows:

Row 23: 139
Row 24: 143
Row 25: 147
Row 26: 151
Row 27: 155
Row 28: 159
Row 29: 163
Row 30: 167
Row 31: 171
Row 32: 175
Row 33: 179
Row 34: 183
Row 35: 187
Row 36: 191
Row 37: 195

Row 40: 207
Row 41: 211
Row 42: 215

Sleeves:

Row 1: Attach yarn in bottom right (or left if you’re a lefty) corner of armhole. Hdc in each st and ch from the ch-18 of row 17. (18 sts so far) Hdc 4x evenly up side of tc, hdc in next 18 sts, hdc 4x evenly down side of tc. Join to top of first hdc. (44)

Row 2: Ch-4 (counts as tc + ch here and for rest of sleeve), turn, Sk next st, tc in next. ** ch-1, sk-1 st, tc in next * repeat between * * around. Ch-1, join to third ch from beg of row. (22 tcs)

Row 3: Ch-1, turn, * hdc around ch-sp, hdc in next st. * repeat between * * around, 2hdc around last ch-sp. Join to top of first hdc. (44 hdcs)

Repeat rows 2 & 3: 7 times. If you would like to taper your sleeves, make two hdc decreases (hdc2tog) near the seam on the hdc rows only, starting at row 11. Do decreases for 2 – 3 successive hdc rows.

Finish off with a row of single crochet without turning. Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Add fringe (optional)

Make fringe (like this). Take 2 – 3 strands and attach them every other stitch along the bottom hem.

I hope you just love the It’s Shawl Good pattern! The adult size can be found here, and if you would like the printable file including ALL children’s sizes, you can find that on Ravelry here. Thank you!

  1. In the pattern size 12/14/16 it says to do the repeat till row 36, but, has row counts for 42 rows. Not sure how to do this. Can you clarify please?
  2. Have you ever used a size one yarn on this shawl? I would think that I could go up a size or two to make size one yarn work for it...any thoughts? I started making it & where I measure for gauge I am at 4 inches after row 8 instead of row 6.
  3. On row 19 are there specific stitches to place in the center stitch of the previous row? Having issues with my count. Thanks.
    1. Hi Mary! On that row there will only be 1 TC, ch 1 in that center stitch. If you haven't already, I suggest watching the video tutorial which may help you out. The video can be found here: https://hearthookhome.com/its-shawl-good-cardigan-fringed-triangle-shawl-with-sleeves-crochet-pattern/ If you watch the video and are still needing help, you can send a message to the Heart Hook Home Facebook page, or email support@hearthookhome.com and we can try to get it figured out.
  4. Hello!! I am thinking I am bigger than the small size, but not big enough for the medium. I am about a 10 I think. Do you think I could do the medium pattern with a 5.5 instead of 6.0? Or would it not lay as nice? Thank you!!
  5. Hello! I’m currently making the 12/14/16 size for my niece, and I’m on row 25 now, and I have noticed that the center stitch moves quite often. I was just wondering if you had any tips on that? Also, do you just have a video tutorial for the 12 month size? I seem to do better watching videos for things like this rather then reading a pattern. Thanks in advance!(:
    1. Hi Tara! I have a companion video in another post that hopefully will help. It can be found here: https://hearthookhome.com/its-shawl-good-cardigan-fringed-triangle-shawl-with-sleeves-crochet-pattern/
  6. What are the finished measurements. I need to choose the size I need for my grands. Thank you patters is beautiful.
  7. I purchased the adult size patterns and having problems with the armhole rows. After chaining the 18 chains and skipping the 18 hdcs on the previous row, when I do the next tc, it is off sequence with the tcs in the previous rows. I had the correct stitch count in row 18 - 139 stitches. What am I doing wrong.
    1. Hi Ramona! You are not doing anything wrong! That's how it's supposed to be...once you complete the armhole on the opposite side, the TCs will match up again and will for the rest of the pattern. Hope this helps!
  8. Hi there, I'm confused about the stitch count from row 15- row 18 and on, I got 117 (row 15), 123 (row 16), 131 (row 17), but how do I get back to 117 in row 18? it doesn't seem to add up?
    1. Hi Sarah! On row 18, when crocheting into the armhole chains, you are loosely working HDC's into every other chain...so we are losing a total of 18 stitches that row due to those skipped chains. Hope this makes sense!
  9. Hi, Thank you, this is such a beautiful and easy pattern. I'm making it for my daughter (Size 12/14/16 ). In your pattern, it says "Complete the 2-row sequence until you reach row 36.", but the stitch count is given till row 42 (Row 42: 215). So I'm confused if I should stop at row 36 or continue till row 42. Please help.
    1. Hi Gayatri! Yes, the pattern itself goes to row 36, however if your daughter is on the taller side, then you can make the shawl longer which I have provided stitch counts for. Hope this helps!
    1. Hi Maria! The 2 row sequence is alternating the rows of hdc and tc's. So row 23 (and all following odd numbered rows) will be your TC, ch 1 row, and row 24 (and all following even numbered rows) will be the hdc row. You will also need to continue the increases in the 1st, middle, and last stitches of every row. Hope this helps!
  10. I was hoping to get your lg size shawel good pattern ,,my girl is a big girl, tall and a bit wide..I understood you were going to work it out in larger sizes...please help;I can either copy it or recieve an e-mail..thank you grace giordano
