Easy Child Size Bucket Hat Crochet Pattern

Bucket hats have been wildly popular as of late. When I whipped up the adult size of the Brickhouse Bucket Hat there were many requests for a toddler or child size bucket hat pattern to match. Today we have one! I just love how adorable these hats are on the little ones’ heads.

Grab your little one’s favorite color of Dishie cotton (or any worsted weight cotton) and work one of these hats up in an afternoon. This is a super quick, super simple crochet pattern that is great for beginners. Even better? It uses less than ONE skein of most worsted weight cottons!

This bucket hat would be great for toddlers or young children. Crochet hats are a quick, useful way to build your confidence as a crocheter! Crocheting hats is one of my very favorite things to do.

Materials:

Dishie cotton yarn (worsted weight cotton yarn)
-approx. 150 yards for Toddler, 160 yards for Child (less than one skein!)

Crochet hook in size 4 mm for Toddler Size

Crochet hook in size 5 mm for Child Size

Gauge: 12 hdc sts in 4”

Pattern Notes:

Pattern written using US terms.

Follow the same pattern for each size, using the appropriate hook size as listed above.

Hat body uses the Brick Stitch (tutorial here)

Magic Circle (tutorial here) – alternative = ch-6, sl st to first ch made.

Crab Stitch (optional finishing row, tutorial here)

Sizing: approx. 19″ head circumference for toddler, 20″ head circumference for child.

If your child’s head is any larger than 20″, I recommend using the adult size pattern.

Stitch Abbreviations:

Sl St = Slip Stitch

FLO = Front Loop Only

BLO = Back Loop Only

Bphdc = Back Post Half Double Crochet (tutorial here)

For the toddler size hat follow these instructions using the smaller, 4mm hook. For the child size follow these instructions using the larger, 5mm hook. Questions? Don’t hesitate to shoot me an email!

  1. Love, love, love this pattern! I made 6 hats this summer and they all turned out beautifully! Thank you so much for sharing this adorable pattern; next Spring, I'll be making the adult size for myself.
  2. Thank you for your reply, I am a beginner and sometimes is hard for me to visualize the pattern. Don’t you have a video tutorial for the bucket hat? I love your stitches. Thank you so much.
    1. Hi Magda! I do not have a video for the hat, but I do have a video tutorial for Brick Stitch that is used in this pattern here: https://hearthookhome.com/how-to-crochet-the-brick-stitch/
  3. Hello. I am really confused following your instructions for the Child bucket hat. The photo of the hat shows 3 rows of Bphdc, however, the written instructions only have one row of Bphdc (Row9). Don't know what to do. Thank you.
