Easy Newborn Bunny Hat and Diaper Cover Crochet Pattern – Easter Baby Set

Newborn Easter Bunny Crochet Outfit Pattern

This sweet little free crochet pattern came about because my younger God Sister just had her first baby. He was just born the other day and I can not wait to meet him – and to see him wearing this adorable little set. What a cutie!

There are two sizes included in this diaper cover and beanie set: Preemie and Newborn. If you would like to make this a bit larger than newborn, you could adjust the hat using the Master Beanie Pattern that includes a sizing chart.

Materials:

DK/#3 Weight Yarn (Brava Baby used in photos)
-approx. (70, 100) yards for diaper cover and (110, 140) yards for hat

Crochet hook in size 4.5mm or size needed to obtain gauge

Pom Pom w/ Snap (optional, like these)

Stitch Markers

Yarn Needle

Gauge: 16 sts x 10 rows = 4” square using Double Crochet

Sizing: (Preemie, Newborn)

Diaper Cover fits (13”-15”, 15”-17”) waist.

Hat fits (11”-12”, 13”-14”) head circumference.

Pattern Notes:

Pattern written using US terms.

Odd numbered rows are “right side”.

The chain(s) at the beginning of each row/round do not count as a stitch.

Magic circle alternative: ch-4, join to first chain made to form a circle.

Abbreviations:

Ch(s): Chains
Dc: Double Crochet
Dc2tog: Double Crochet two together
Dc3tog: Double Crochet three together
Sc: Single crochet
Sl st: Slip stitch
St(s): Stitches

Diaper Cover:

Row 1: Ch-(26, 32) dc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch to end. (24, 30)

Rows 2 & 3: Ch-2, turn, dc in each st across. (24, 30)

Rows 4 through (10, 12): Ch-2, turn, dc2tog, dc in each st across until only two sts remain, dc2tog. [removes two sts per row, ending with (10, 12) sts]

Rows (11, 13) through (16, 18): repeat row 2 (10, 12)

Rows (17, 19) through (20, 23): Ch-2, turn, 3dc in first st, dc in each st across, 3dc in final st. [adds four sts per row, ending with (26, 32) sts]

Fold the final row up to the first row and looking at inside, join to the bottom of the first st from row 1.

Belly Band:

Round 1: Ch-2, turn (so that you are looking at the outside), dc in each st across front, dc in each st across the back until only two sts remain, dc2tog. Join to top of first st with sl st. (49, 61)

Round 3: Ch-2, do not turn, Bpdc around next st, * Fpdc around next, Bpdc around next st * repeat between * * around. Join to top of first st with sl st. (49, 61)

Round 4: repeat round 2 (49, 61)

Round 5: Ch-1, do not turn, sc in each st around. Fasten off using Invisible Join. (49, 61)

Weave in all ends.

Leg openings:

Join at the hip, ch-1, sc evenly around the leg opening. Join to first sc with sl st. Fasten off and weave in all ends. Repeat on other leg.

Bunny Hat:

Ears:

Make two…

Round 1: Magic Circle, ch-1, 6dc in circle. Join to top of first st with sl st. (6)

Round 2: Ch-2, 2dc in each st around. Join to top of first st with sl st. (12)

Round 3: Ch-2, * dc in next st, 2dc in next * repeat between * * around. Join to top of first st with sl st. (18)

Rounds 4 through 12: Ch-2, dc in each st around. Join to top of first st with sl st. (18)

Round 13: Ch-2, * dc in next st, dc2tog * repeat between * * around. Join to top of first st with sl st. (12)

Round 14: Ch-2, dc2tog around. Join to top of first st with sl st. (6)

Fasten off and weave in all ends. Set aside.

Beanie:

Make one…

Round 1: Magic Circle, ch-1, 10dc in circle. Join to top of first st with sl st. (10)

Round 2: Ch-2, 2dc in each st around. Join to top of first st with sl st. (20)

Lay ears flat (so that they are 3 sts wide) and position on either side of the crown, with 7 sts in between each. Use stitch markers to hold them in place if helpful.

Round 3: Ch-2, * dc in next st, 2dc in next * repeat between * * around, working through the ears for those appropriate stitches. Join to top of first st with sl st. (30)

Round 4: Ch-2, * dc in next 2 sts, 2dc in next * repeat between * * around. Join to top of first st with sl st. (40)

Size Newborn only:
Round 5: Ch-2, * dc in next 3 sts, 2dc in next * repeat between * * around. Join to top of first st with sl st. (50)

Rounds (5, 6) through (11, 13): Ch-2, dc in each st around. Join to top of first st with sl st. (40, 50)

Round 12: Ch-1, sc in each st around. Fasten off using Invisible Join. (40, 50)

Weave in all ends.

Use a scrap piece of yarn to sew the snap securely into place.

When ready for your newborn tummy photos, snap the pom onto the diaper cover and voila! How adorable is this little newborn bunny?!
