Ahhh, fall… how I have missed you. With you you bring pumpkins, fire pits and crisp, morning air. Which is also why this new Four-Hour Fall Sweater crochet pattern is perfect for you! ♥

Four Hour Fall Sweater Free Crochet Pattern

Four Hour Fall Sweater Crochet Pattern

This chunky sweater reminds me of football games and fire pits. It reminds me of friends and laughter, of foggy mornings, and steam rising off of a fresh cup of coffee. Yep, I’m ready!

Four Hour Fall Sweater free crochet pattern

This sweater has been one of my most popular free patterns to date. This fall I decided to give this pattern a facelift! While originally this pattern went off of body measurements (which could make it difficult to make if crocheting for someone other than yourself) the updated version includes a gauge which means it also includes stitch counts, row counts, and more detailed instructions and yardage information. The sleeve is also more tapered than the original and is so much more flattering, in my opinion.

The pattern is now written to include a wide range of sizes: XS – 5XL. I am so pleased with how this update turned out! 👐

How to crochet the four hour fall sweater

This is a free crochet pattern. For this pattern we’ll use a super chunky yarn (or chunky, up to you!) and an oversized crochet hook. If you choose to go with a size 5 (bulky) yarn, it will be a bit more of an open weave, as the ivory pictured here. If you go with a thicker (size 6) yarn it will be more dense and definitely warmer.

Comfy oversized crochet pattern

Each sweater made from this pattern is completely customizable; make it longer to wear with leggings or make the next size up for an oversized fit to wear around the house. Give it a small neck opening or a huge boat neck so it falls off the shoulder.

I named this sweater the Four Hour Fall Sweater because that’s about how long it takes me to make. It could take you a shorter amount of time or longer, depending on how quickly you crochet and how much time you can devote to the completion of it.

No matter what though, it’s the quickest clothing item I’ve ever completed! So there’s that. 😉

Easy free crochet sweater pattern

This pattern uses the Lemon Peel stitch. Super easy, super quick, super texture! A video tutorial for this stitch can be found here.

Want to make a not-so-chunky sweater?  Then you’ll want the Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy pullover pattern. (Which is also getting a facelift this fall!)

Sew the top (shoulders) together from the outside in, using the Mattress Stitch for (11, 12, 14, 15, 17, 18, 20, 20, 22) stitches on each side. Before weaving in ends check that the neck hole is a good size for you. Add or remove sewn stitches to your liking.

  1. I made it with a less bulky yarn (4) but with a large hook. I also made the sleeves bell a little because my sister likes them by adding a couple of extra stitches every third row. It took me a couple of days. I think it would have been a lot quicker with bulky or super bulky yarn and and the Q hook. The pattern was easy to follow .
    1. Hi Gail! I'm glad to hear it worked well for you! The bigger yarn and hook make it work up faster, for sure. I hope you'll make another one, and for you this time!
  2. I love this sweater!!! So easy and pretty! I am on my third one! But I am so bummed the Caron Teacakes are almost all sold out I had to order from a site in the UK just to get some more yarn to make more!! Can I link your pattern to my blog with my pictures of the sweater?
  3. Quick and simple! Made this over the weekend in Lion Brand Jiffy (Avocado) - perfect green for fall. The panels and sleeves were a breeze. However, adding the rows of SC along the bottom edge really made the sweater look stiff and strange. I think this week I will rip out the SC rows and try a different edging.
  4. Thank you for this patterm. I have made 1 of these and 2 of the Lemon Pleasey sweater. I love them!!!

  8. I would LOVE to know where I can get the crochet hook you used for this project...which I love! It willbemy next project. Something for myself for a change! I’m having a very hard time finding an extra long size Q hook. Or any larger hooks in ‘tunisian’ length. I find them so much more comfortable to use.....the one pictured here really looks like a nice quality hook as well. Thank you so much for Sharing your talents and writing patterns in such an easy to follow format.
  9. Hi! Thank you so much for this gorgeous, easy to follow pattern.. adjusted it a bit (no sleeves and changed the bottom bit), but love how it turned out. I got so many compliments today, that I cant wait to make another one.. trying to save a pic..

  11. I really like your designs and really love how you make them easy for us that aren't super experienced to make some fabulous things, sweaters. thank you for making it simple and easy to follow
  12. I just finished this sweater and I absolutely love it! It did not take me 4 hours but I did finish it in less than 4 days because I had other things to do like laundry and feeding my husband. I used the Caron Tea Cake yarn in Coneflower . The front and back were easy and fast but when it came to the sleeves, I had to use a stitch marker so I knew where to start the next round. I did add a row of single crochet around the neck edge since I'm a senior and too old to have the neckline dipping down my shoulders. My cat also loves the sweater and thinks it's her personal blanket.

  18. I need help, ehen i started the SPIRAL ON SLEEVES, afterva few rows i noticed it looked different, because the stitches are going wrong way how they go in thevsweater! Is this right? Please help love this sweater, your pics dont show that the stitches look different. Is it just me or are they going a different durection? Please reply soon. Lana
  19. So I finished the 2nd piece and it is 2 stitches smaller than the first one do you think it will matter in the size? Should I continue on or ripe it out and re do it?
  20. Having fits trying to figure out how much yarn I need for 52" hip size. The sizing given is for size "L" but the sizing link only reflects size numbers....so 52" hips would be Size 18.... What size is a Large? How many cakes or yards would I need? Sorry I'm such a mathematical rookie. Thanks.
    1. Hi! I think a 14/16 or so is a Large. I used 2.5 cakes for my size L, so I would think you'd need 3, but I'd probably buy 4 to be safe. Hope that helps.
  21. I just made the ugliest sweater ever and i love it. It seriously is a monstrosity but its mine and i worked hard on it and its warm and makes me laugh everytime i wear it. Im really bad at measurements so yeah.
    1. Oh no! I'm glad you can laugh. I called my first one the Red sweater from Fraggle Rock! I've found that the beginning chain needs to be niiiiice and loose so that it doesn't balloon out.
  22. Looking forward to trying this pattern. I love the color you used. Could you please tell me the name of the color. Thanks
  23. I've just finished my jumper and I love it! I used King Cole Carousel Chunky (I'm in the U.K.) and needed about 1.5 balls (I'm a U.K. Size 10). It took way more than 4 hours but I found the monster hook hard to use and it took me a long time to get into the rhythm. I love that the pattern is easy to adapt and it is the first garment pattern out if the many I have followed which has given me an understanding of how to create a jumper and the confidence to try my own thing next time. So thank you!
  24. 10 hours and three Caron Tea Cakes later, it came out beautiful. I made it longer. It's a little too thick and it itches. My daughter is going to wear a turtle neck underneath.
    1. Hi Linda, you can get the printable pattern here: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/four-hour-chunky-sweater
  25. I am ordering some fuzzy mohair bulky yarn to make this sweater, it will be more tunic length tho. My question is can this be done in hdc instead of sc,dc ? The mohair has no stitch definition so the pattern won't show up at all.
  26. Love this stitch and been wanting to use it for a top - thanks for the inspiration. And the needle size tip is appreciated ;)
  27. Hi, Thanks for such a lovely pattern. . But I hand an inexperienced question, how or what is meant by “work in a spiral instead”?
    1. Excuse me jumping in ;) It means that when working in a round you don't join with a slip stitch and chain up to start the next row, instead you ignore the row ending and just continue crocheting around. Hope that makes sense.
  28. Love this! The pattern took me a little longer because I'm using a smaller hook for a tighter stitch and more warmth, but I LOVE the simplicity and clear description. This seems so easy to customize and I feel like I've finally found a good quick pattern for those oooh-make-me-a-sweater-type friends/relatives (as if I whip them up in an hour), lol. THANK YOU!
  29. Hi Ashlea! I love this pattern, and just finished row 31 on my first side. Scanning ahead, I’m nervous that rows 25-31 won’t be big enough for my upper arms. Can I add 2 more rows, going to row 33 without causing issue? I don’t mind the sweater being a bit longer. Im laying today, for too many years as a kid doing upper body sports, lol. This is also the first sweater I’ve ever done, and am pretty lost in how to start the arms. I saw a reference to a FB group above. Do you have any tips or pix there that could help me better understand the steps? Thank you!
    1. Hi! Yes, you can do as many rows as you like. I'd be sure to try it on as soon as possible though to make sure it doesn't get too large. If you'd like to send me a photo I'd be happy to take a look at it! Thanks ashlea@hearthookhome.com
  30. Hey Ashley... Any suggestions on making it for a two year old? She's in 2t/3t clothing. I need it for her Halloween costume asap
  31. Hi Ashlea, I’m trying to make this shirt. I have one side made. How should it look? Should it just be the size of the front of you? Or should it go around your sides a bit? Also where it starts to do the shoulder part I guess that is what you would call it? Should it over lap on your arms or more like a tank top. I haven’t made clothing before can you tell lol. Sorry tia if you can help. Thanks SunShine
  32. I want yo make my sweater "longer"... somewhere between my hips and my knees... would I just keep making rows after I do the 25 row repeat..?? And as for the hook ... I went to all the hobby lobby's close to me (3). And they don't have tht awesome hook ... I even went on their website and could. Of find it.... it would be swell if you could find ourt where your MOM found it... I was iOS be forever grateful....!!!!

    1. Hi Jen, It is customizable, so you'll use your own body measurement. If you are making for someone else, there is a link just above the pattern that shows approximately how many inches for each size. Hope that helps!
    1. Hi Mary! You'll chain until you get the width needed from hip to hip. Let me know if you need more help! Thanks
  34. Hey Ashley Unfortunately we are not able to get the Caron Tea Cakes, here in the UK. Would you be able to recommend an alternative? Thank you in advance...
    1. Hey Karen! That's okay! You could use any bulky weight/size 5 yarn. I'm not sure what they call that on your side of the pond, but its one step up from Aran, if that helps?
    2. Hi Karen, can I ask, where were you able to get a 15mm hook from? My local craft shop stops at a size 12mm, she said they don't come any bigger!!!
  35. Do I need to buy the PDF to get additional sizing info? I'd like to make one for my sister, who is tiny, and one for myself in an XL or 2X (I love oversized sweaters!). Can't wait to start on these!
    1. Hey! No, there is a helpful sizing chart listed above the pattern. It shows the approximate inches for different sizes, so you'd use that number. I'm glad you love it!
      1. Thanks for the info, I may just wait and make it the next time I visit her, so she can decide how big/long she wants it. I just got the yarn in for ir, can't wait!
  36. Can't wait to try this, have some Tea Cakes in Ginger Spice headed my way. And OMG, where did you get that awesome Q hook?
  37. First off, I LOVE LOVE LOVE this sweater! Where did you find that awesome hook? I would love to make a bunch of these sweaters and would love to have that hook!! Thanks so much!! Kim Murphy
