Anatomical Heart Crochet Pattern

The reason for the HEART in Heart Hook Home is that my oldest son, Caden, has a rare and severe congenital heart defect (CHD). He has been through many procedures and open heart surgeries, with another coming in April of 2026. Follow along with that journey as I update along the way! ♥

I decided to make his surgeon a crocheted heart to place in his office as a “thank you” for all of the wonderful work he has done to improve the quality of Caden’s life and the length of it. I hope that whomever you crochet this anatomical heart for appreciates it and loves it as much as I enjoyed creating it.

From my sister, the anatomy professor:

The human heart is a muscular organ about the size of a fist, located behind the sternum and ribs. The heart has four chambers – two atria up top, and two ventricles below. Large vessels allow for blood to move into and out of the heart. The aorta, the largest blood vessel, emerges from the top of the heart and carries oxygen rich blood to the body. Blood depleted of oxygen blood returns to the heart through the largest veins in the body – the superior and inferior vena cavae. Inside the heart, valves act like tiny one way doors, keeping blood flowing in the right direction with each beat. Even though it’s often symbolized in simple shapes, the real heart is a beautifully complex structure—perfect inspiration for a detailed crochet creation!

Thank you, Meadow!

For this pattern we are using My Ami yarn from Herrschners. This is a great yarn for amigurumi – and it’s literally in the name! This yarn has excellent stitch definition and consistency, meaning smooth and clean looking amigurumi. They also have some amazing colors, and the best “red” and “sapphire” for the heart. Perfect!

I’ve included the main structures of the heart – from the Aorta to the Pulmonary Artery to the Superior Vena Cava. If you want to get super fancy, you could add some blue veins with yarn, embroidery floss, or thread.

Now let’s make an anatomical crocheted heart!

Aorta – Sew the three smaller tubes to the top of the longer tube, as pictured, with the shortest tube on one end and the longest on the other.

Superior Vena Cava – one piece

Pulmonary Artery – one piece, two tubes

Pulmonary Veins – four individual tubes, two on each side.

Pin the Pulmonary Artery (PA) to the side of the heart, with the bottom of it lined up to round 21 of the heart body.

Fold the Pulmonary Artery across the top of the heart body as pictured above and position the Aorta perpendicular to it and on top of it as pictured below.

Place both ends of the Aorta around round 20 of the heart body as pictured, with the shortest tube positioned closer to the Pulmonary Artery.

Position the Superior Vena Cava opposite of the Pulmonary Artery, around round 21 of the body.

Position two Pulmonary Veins on each side of the heart vertically, near the base of the Aorta.

Using the yarn tails, sew the pieces securely into place. When sufficiently sewn on, feed the yarn through the bottom of the heart and clip your yarn. You are finished!

  1. Can you explain the spiral that is needed for the various parts? My brain is thinking end over end but that reminder me of a rectangle. My brain isn't computing it. THANKS!!!
