What’s better than a comfy blanket cardigan? A VERTICAL row Blanket Cardigan! By popular demand I have created this NEW crochet pattern which works up quickly, is very easy, and requires minimal sewing.

As you may know, my mom comes over for early coffee three days a week. (As in – I’m literally stumbling out of bed as she walks in.) This week she watched the progression of this particular blanket cardigan, which she all but claimed on day one. Bahaha!! Happy early birthday, Mom! ♥

What I love about this pattern is that there are *actual* shoulders built in. This makes it feel as if it isn’t going to fall off your shoulders at any moment. Here’s Mom, modeling from different angles… Don’t you just LOVE IT!?

The original pattern (the horizontal row pattern) of the Blanket Cardigan can be found here.

This pattern is MUCH easier than it looks! I believe that this pattern would be a perfect first apparel item, and uses the Half Double Crochet. You could add fringe to one side, both, or none at all!

For the vertical blanket cardigan pictured here, I used three strands of Red Heart’s NEW It’s a Wrap yarn held together. I did stagger the colors so that they would transition slowly, which necessitated the use of nearly SIX cakes for the size large. If you would like a similar effect at much less cost, you could use three separate strands/colors of size 30 crochet thread to get the same effect.

If you want to use just one strand of yarn, it needs to be the thickness of those three strands I held together in order to match gauge. So, using ONE strand of a lightweight/size 3/DK yarn would be a great substitute. Make sure you check your gauge as specified in the pattern before starting on your cardigan.

  3. When I purchased the pattern on Ravelry, the pattern downloaded as a horizontal cardigan without instructions to change it to vertical. Help! What did I miss?
  4. Hi Ashley, I love all of your patterns, but this is my first article of clothing to try. I'm using the big Caron Cakes #4. It seems so thick using two strands. Maybe I misunderstood your answer to the person asking about using a #4 yarn. Help,
    1. Hi Linda! Yes, there was a misunderstanding there. The person before was asking about a thinner weight yarn that is probably closer to a #2 weight...it consists of 4 strands of fiber that are about the equivalent of thread. I can understand the confusion. The pattern itself calls for a #3 weight (sport, DK, baby) but if you would like to go ahead with the Caron Cakes that you have (single stranded), I would go up a hook size and down a pattern size. Hope this helps!
    1. Hi Elizabeth! You could try using a worsted yarn instead of a 3 weight and a larger hook. Hope this helps!
  5. So I got some it's a wrap rainbow. It's 4 strands together. Would I still need to use multiple cakes at the same time? If not how many do you think I would need for a large? Thanks for all the hard work you do, I just love your patterns.
    1. Hi Shanna! You will probably want to double up the yarn and do 2 cakes at a time...so I would estimate that you would need 8 cakes for a size large. Hope that helps and happy crocheting!
