You blew me away with the response to my new pattern: the Egg-cellent Apron, the apron for adults. I love that you love it, so much so that I have created a child size apron as well!  Can I get a woot woot?!

This Egg-cellent child size Apron holds eight eggs, it is approximately 15 inches wide and 10 inches tall.  It fits my eight year old and my ten year old perfectly, and would also be great for the adult whose hens don’t lay a gazillion eggs every day (the adult size holds up to nineteen eggs).

This is a free crochet pattern.  If you would like an ad-free version, that is available here on Ravelry and here on Etsy for an itty-bity fee. Thank you!

Egg-cellent Child Size Egg Gathering Apron

Egg-cellent Child Size Apron

Materials:
Size J crochet hook
Upholstery needle for sewing
Bobby pins (or stitch markers)
Approx: 350 yards of Acrylic/Cotton blend (size 4, medium weight)
***pictured: Hobby Lobby’s “Denim in Color” in Gray”

Gauge:
4″ square = 12 hdc sts wide, 10 hdc sts tall
***gauge isn’t too awfully important, unless you crochet VERY tight or VERY loose.

Pattern:

Main body:
Row 1: Ch-45. Hdc in 2nd ch from hk and in each across. Ch-1, turn. (44)
Rows 2 – 24 : Hdc in each st across. Ch-1, turn. (44)
Row 25: Hdc in each st across. (44)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
***should measure approx. 10″ tall and approx. 15″ wide if on gauge.

Pockets:
Make two
Row 1: Ch-41. Hdc in 2nd ch from hk and in each across. Ch-1, turn. (40)
Row 2: *Hdc in first, 2hdc in next* repeat between * * to end. Ch-1, turn. (60)
Row 3 – 7: Hdc in each st across. Ch-1, turn. (60)
Row 8: Hdc in each st across. (60)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
***pockets will be curved, like this:

Construction:

Each pocket will hold four eggs. Before sewing anything, place bobby pins (or stitch markers) where the corners of each pocket will be. Starting with the bottom pocket, find the second row up from the bottom and two stitches in on each side. Place your markers. From those markers, go up eight rows. Place two more stitch markers. From those stitch markers, go up four rows. Then place again another eight rows up as shown.

Start sewing the bottom of the bottom pocket. First we will sew the entire bottom edge (all 40 sts) to the corresponding stitches on the apron back. Just line up the stitches and whip stitch them together using your upholstery needle. When finished we will flip the pockets up. Each pocket will be 10 stitches wide across the back but 15 stitches wide across the front.

After whip stitching the 40 stitches across the bottom, add bobby pins (or stitch markers) every 15 stitches along what will be the top. Fold the pocket up and begin sewing up the outer edge (maintaining the two stitches for margin), and then in between each egg. (tip: instead of fastening off in between each egg, feed the yarn through to the next pocket and keep on sewing)

Line up the bobby pins and sew each pocket, making sure to line them up, 15 sts across the front to 10 sts across the back. You might move the bobby pins 10 stitches across the back each time. It helps to make sure you’re on track.

Continue sewing pockets, lining up every 10sts/15 sts. When finished with all “egg” pockets get read for the strap.

Strap:
Row 1: Ch-40. Attach yarn to top right corner of apron, sc in each stitch across. Ch-41. (125)
Row 2: Sc in 2nd ch from hk and in each across. Ch-1, turn. (124)
Rows 3 – 4: Sc in each st to end. Ch-1, turn. (124)
Row 5: Sc in each to end. (124)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

You are done!!

A child size apron would be perfect for Easter Egg hunts as well as for chores. 😉  Remember if you would like an ad-free version, that is available here on Ravelry and here on Etsy for an itty-bity fee. Thank you and enjoy!! If you make a matching set I’d love to see your photos in my Heart Hook Home Crochet Community Facebook Group!

Hi Sue! You can use acrylic, but it may stretch more than you'd like with use.

Hi! Is there a photo of how the strap is supposed to be attached and can that be done before the pockets are sewn on? Having a difficult time envisioning how the strap is supposed to be done. Obviously I need pictures or a video for how to do the strap. Thanks in advance. Have a great weekend.

Yes, I think so! You might want to make the straps longer though.

The children in the photos were 6 at the time. If you fo down to an I/5.5mm hook I bet that would work great!

I just finished making this for my niece who collects the eggs on her family farm. I tweaked it a little so it would have 12 pockets and added a few more rows and stitches to the strap for sturdiness and longevity. The pattern was clear and easy to follow. Thank you.

I'm making the kid sized one but will be using 100% cotton yarn. Should I wash the yarn first for "shrinkage" and if so, how would I wash it? help please!

Hi! I don't wash mine first, I just make sure that when I wash anything made with cotton later on that I use cold water and line dry. Hope that helps!

Is the Ch1 counted in the stitch count or is it 44 Hdc + 1 chain stitch?

Do you have any pictures of what the strap looks like? I'm not sure I did it correctly. Not sure that I joined it with the apron in the right manner. Thanks! Love this pattern! I'm making a few of them for my cousins who live on a farm. They are really excited! Thanks again!

Thanks for the pattern, it was fun to make something different. I made 3 for my friends nieces. these are great for gifts. All the kids I know , many raise chickens, want them. I used Bernat home Dec. It turned out great! The yarn is a weight of 5, and its a cotton/nylon mix. See a picture of mine on [email protected]_bliss. Thanks again for the pattern!

Quick question: is there a reason why you did the strap differently on the kids one? ie: on the adult one you folded it over and whip stitched. Any reason you didn't do that with the kids one? I'm making a set and would like them to match.

If I wanted to make an adult size apron that holds about 8 eggs would you suggest I use the adult size pattern except for the pockets or use the child size and make it slightly larger? Thanks.

I have made both now. The pockets are exactly the same size. Everything about the body of the kids one is exactly the same as the adult except only 8 eggs. If it's for an adult the only thing that would need to be changed would be the strap. It would need to be made bigger/longer to tie around an adult.

Lynn Smith, I would love to have one of these for my 15yo granddaughter. She only has 6 chickens so would not need all the adult pockets. She is on the small size so would probably only need the child apron with a longer sash. How much would that cost?

Thanks you for the pattern!! I look forward to making a few of these!! I was wondering if 100 percent cotton would work, as I am having a very tough time coming across the cotton/acrylic blend?

She said within the posts for the adult pattern that she does not knit. I don't knit much myself, but was wondering if you could knit a block the same dimensions of the pattern pieces and go from there to create an apron somewhat similar to this one.
